Utica, NY - The Utica College women's basketball looks to get back on track as they will host Stevens Friday night at 5:30 p.m. Then Saturday afternoon the lady ballers are back in action for a mid-day matchup at home against Nazareth College at 2 p.m.
White Out!: Fans are asked to wear white to the men's and women's basketball games on Friday night to support the Pioneers and raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Â Fans will have the chance to buy tickets for a 50/50 raffle at the men's game, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.
A Game for Brooks Miles: Saturday afternoon the Utica College women's basketball team will host Nazareth for their 7th annual "A Game For Brooks Miles." This year's proceeds are to benefit Ella Ryan from Clinton, NY. Ella was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L) in March of 2018, shortly after turning two years old. As to date the Utica College women's basketball team has raised a total of $6,458.75 for local groups and children like Lorraine of Herkimer Co., Grady's Way, The 21 Club of CNY, Faxton-St. Luke's Miracle Network, Kendall Mcnamara, and Lena Dorsagno. During the game there will be a 50/50 raffle and bake sale to raise money.
Last Time Out: Tuesday night the Pioneers hosted the Empire 8 conference leader Hartwick at home. UC lost,77-89, as the visiting Hawks improved to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in the E8. Utica's record goes down to 6-10 overall and just 1-6 in conference competition, as the team has now lost six in a row. Four players reached double-figures for UC in the contest, but the team was unable to keep up with Hartwick's offensive firepower.
Making the Right Pass: Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) had a great game against Hartwick, as her court vision created opportunities for her teammates all night long. Conkin recorded a career-high 17 assists, tying the season high in assists for a single game among all levels of NCAA women's basketball. She currently leads the Empire 8 with 80 total assists and averages five assists per game.
Kim For Three: Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancey Memorial) had the hot hand during Tuesday night's game, scoring a career-high 17 points and making five shots from beyond the 3-point arc. She was one of four players who broke double digits in the scoring column. Soriano has totaled 27 points over the last two games, scoring 10 or more points in back-to-back games for the first time in her collegiate career.
Goda Is Good: Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) is still on top of the Empire 8 leaderboards in rebounds with 199 total boards and an average of 12.4 rebounds a game. Przygoda is a top 20 rebounder in the country as a freshman going into the weekend set of games. She is the team's leading scorer and is ranked sixth in the conference with an average of 14.1 points a game. Sydney has posted 10 double-doubles (points-rebounds) so far this year.
Scouting Stevens: The Ducks are boasting a record of 11-6 overall and 6-2 in Empire 8 play. UC played Stevens on the road earlier this season and Stevens came out on top, 53-44. Stevens has picked up some traction with a four game win streak after taking down Alfred University, 55-41, on Saturday. Anna Toke led the way with a double-double on 20 points and 16 rebounds. Jess Broad is the team's top scorer, averaging 15.2 points per game.
Scouting Nazareth: Nazareth has a 10-5 overall record and are 5-1 in E8 competition heading into the weekend. The Golden Flyers are third in the conference, just slightly behind Stevens in the standings. The team is looking to win its third straight game on Friday against Hartwick before coming to play UC on Saturday. Rachel Benedict leads the way for Naz, as she is the top scorer in the conference with an average of 17.3 points per game and is second in the E8 with 11.1 rebounds per game.
On The Road Again: The Pioneers will hit the road following the weekend, as they travel to take on St. John Fisher on Tuesday. The game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
