TROY, NY- Four players scored in double digits to help lead the Utica College women's basketball team to a 64-54 win over host the Sage Colleges Friday night in the Empire 8 Conference opener.
With the win, Utica improves to 6-4 overall (1-0 Empire 8). The Pioneers will look to carry their momentum into a contest against E8 foe Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first 3:35 of play and went on to lead 20-13 after the first quarter. Sage responded though over the next ten minutes to trail UC just 31-28 at halftime. The score remained close heading into the fourth quarter before the Pioneers were able to pull away.
Senior
Briannah Florian (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) led UC with a season-high 16 points, while
Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) and
Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) were right behind her with 15 points each. Johndrow also brought down 11 rebounds, marking her first career double-double. Freshman
Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) recorded her fifth straight double-double as she finished with 10 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
Utica also had scoring from
Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and
Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancey Memorial). Florian and Conkin led the squad with three steals each, while Johndrow dished out seven assists. Sage meanwhile was led by Giuliana Pritchard, who had 18 points.
