Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Sgarlata Lifts UC to Thrilling OT Win

TROY, NY- Senior Josie Sgarlata (Canastota, NY/Canastota) scored the game-winner just 19 seconds into overtime as the Utica College field hockey team earned a thrilling 4-3 come-from-behind win over host RPI in non-conference action Tuesday evening.

Trailing 3-2 with less than a minute remaining, junior Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) tied things up with her team-leading sixth goal of the season with just 40 seconds left in regulation.  Senior Ricki Haab (Stowe, VT/Stowe) assisted on the equalizer.

Then, with things barely settled down after the tying goal, Sgarlata sent the Pioneers into jubilation as she netted her third of the year just 19 seconds into the extra frame.

Sgarlata also opened the scoring as she put in a feed from Sabrina Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) at 10:46 to give Utica an early lead.  Haab added to that just 3:43 later when she converted a penalty stroke for her second of the season.

The score remained the same until the third quarter as RPI exploded for three goals to take a 3-2 advantage. Scaccia and Sgarlata made sure to send the UC fans home happy however with their heroic efforts in the waning minutes of play.

Sophomore Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had six saves in the win, while her counterpart, Jen Richardson finished with 11 saves.

The Pioneers (4-7) have now won four of their last six.  They look to carry that momentum into an Empire 8 Conference showdown against Nazareth College at home on Saturday.  Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
