TROY, NY- Senior
Josie Sgarlata (Canastota, NY/Canastota) scored the game-winner just 19 seconds into overtime as the Utica College field hockey team earned a thrilling 4-3 come-from-behind win over host RPI in non-conference action Tuesday evening.
Â
Trailing 3-2 with less than a minute remaining, junior
Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) tied things up with her team-leading sixth goal of the season with just 40 seconds left in regulation. Senior
Ricki Haab (Stowe, VT/Stowe) assisted on the equalizer.
Â
Then, with things barely settled down after the tying goal, Sgarlata sent the Pioneers into jubilation as she netted her third of the year just 19 seconds into the extra frame.
Â
Sgarlata also opened the scoring as she put in a feed from
Sabrina Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) at 10:46 to give Utica an early lead. Haab added to that just 3:43 later when she converted a penalty stroke for her second of the season.
Â
The score remained the same until the third quarter as RPI exploded for three goals to take a 3-2 advantage. Scaccia and Sgarlata made sure to send the UC fans home happy however with their heroic efforts in the waning minutes of play.Â
Â
Sophomore
Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had six saves in the win, while her counterpart, Jen Richardson finished with 11 saves.
Â
The Pioneers (4-7) have now won four of their last six. They look to carry that momentum into an Empire 8 Conference showdown against Nazareth College at home on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Â
