Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Tops Potsdam in 8th Annual Brooks Miles Game

Utica, NY - The Utica College women's basketball advanced to 2-0 with a convincing 83-57 win over Potsdam Tuesday night in the Brooks Miles game.

The proceeds for this year's Brooks Miles game will benefit The Compassionate Friends of the Mohawk Valley Chapter. The Compassionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to families experiencing the death of a son or daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. Utica College Professor of Psychology Dave Roberts is the President of the Mohawk Valley Chapter. "A Game for Brooks Miles" was created after Utica College Alum Dr. Greg Rorick ('98) and his wife Angela lost their son, Brooks, shortly after he was born in 2008 from heart complications.

The Utica College Basketball team has raised a total of $12,215.75 for local groups and children like Gram Lorraine of Herkimer Co., Grady's Way, The 21 Club of CNY, Faxton-St. Luke's Children's Miracle Network, Ella Ray Ryan, Kendall McNamara, and Lena Dorsagno.

This year marked the eighth annual "A Game for Brooks Miles," and the Pioneers showed out in front of a packed Miga Court.

Senior guard Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) served as UC's catalyst all night, posting a career-high 28 points while also adding five assists and four rebounds.

Conkin wasted no time setting the tone in this one, as she poured in six of Utica's first eight points to take an early 8-0 lead not even two minutes into this contest. She kept things rolling from there, outscoring the entire Potsdam team in the first quarter with 15 points to carry a 30-14 lead heading into the second quarter. A bulk of Conkins' scoring came from the charity stripe, as she went 7 of 8 from the line on the night.

Potsdam bounced back with a small run of its own to start the second quarter and drew within eight, but this was the closest margin it would see for the rest of the game.

Sophomore Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) was also a huge part of this victory, finishing the game with her first double-double of the season with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

Junior Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) created most  of the opportunities for the Pioneers this evening, as she tabbed a game-high six assists and added seven points in the process.

The Pioneers have now outscored their opponents 182-91 thus far, marking the largest margin of victory in program history over opponents in the first two games of the season.

This marks the third season in a row that UC has started its season with a 2-0 record, and it will look to protect its no-loss season this Saturday at home against Wells College at 2 p.m. for the Alumni Weekend game.
