Women's Basketball Earns Lopsided Victory Over Wells for Third Straight Win

Utica, NY - The Utica College women's basketball team cruised to a perfect 3-0 record with a convincing 84-30 win over the Wells Express at Miga Court Saturday afternoon.

This was a one-sided affair from the beginning, as the Pioneers jumped out to an early 25-0 lead at the 2:28 mark of the first quarter. Stifling defense by the Pioneers limited the Express to only seven first-quarter points. Utica built on this in the second quarter, outscoring Wells 19-2 to head into the half with a 50-9 advantage.

Sophomore forward Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) led the Pioneers on both ends of the court, posting a game-high 21 points while grabbing seven rebounds. The most impressive part of her outing was making every single shot she attempted, as she finished shooting 9 of 9 from the field.

Senior guard Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) continued her stellar 2019 campaign, netting 14 points while adding game-highs in both assists (6) and steals (6).

Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancy Memorial) and Marissa Woods (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) led the air raid attack from 3-point land for the Pioneers, as they combined for seven of Utica's eight 3s on the afternoon. DeMarco and Soriano finished with 11 points while Woods notched 10.

Freshman Cassie Chalon (Norwich, NY/Cato-Meridian) proved to be a force underneath the basket, as she had a breakout performance with a game-high nine boards while adding eight points in the process.

This marks the first time since the 2009-10 season that the Pioneers have started the season with a 3-0 overall record, and they will look to keep that rolling over the upcoming six-game road trip.

Utica starts this road trip on Tuesday night, as it travels for SUNY Oneonta for a non-conference matchup at 5:30 p.m.
