Women's Basketball Drops First Game of Season at Oneonta

Utica, NY - The Utica College women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season in a non-conference road matchup against SUNY Oneonta Tuesday night.

This game was as even as it could get, as the Pioneers worked a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and went into the half tied at 34 with the Red Dragons. UC worked its way to a 56-52 advantage at the end of the third, but Oneonta outscored Utica in the fourth quarter 26-14 to take home a 78-70 victory.

Senior Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) had her best game of the season, finishing just two steals shy of a triple-double with game-highs in points (23), assists (10) and steals (eight). Sophomore Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) also tabbed another impressive outing for the Pioneers, posting her third-straight 20-plus point night with 21 points while adding nine rebounds in the process. Przygoda was just one rebound removed from notching her second double-double of the season.

Sophomore Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) was feeling it from behind the arc, netting a season and game-high five 3s. DeMarco finished the night shooting 5 of 10 from beyond the arc, and she now leads the team with 11 3-pointers thus far in 2019.

The duo of Conkin and Przygoda is the highest scoring in the Empire 8, as Przygoda leads the league with 20.3 points per game while Conkin sits right behind her with 19.5. The next highest scorer is Hartwick's Giuliana Prtichard, who is averaging 14 points per game.

Utica will continue its six-game road trip this Saturday at 2 p.m., as it travels to take on the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Trail Blazers in a non-conference matchup.
