Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) notched her second double-double of the season with 28 points and 14 rebounds, leading the Utica College women's basketball team to a convincing 80-54 win over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Saturday afternoon.
This contest was back and forth early on, as the score was nine-all at the 2:29 mark in the first quarter. Junior guard
Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancy Memorial) ignited an 8-0 run on a 3-pointer with 2:13 left to play in the first, and Przygoda closed out the quarter with a layup to give UC a 14-9 lead.
Utica built on this lead coming out in the second quarter, as sophomore guard
Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) netted one of her three 3-pointers to give her team its largest lead of the game, 17-9. The Pioneers slowly built on this, working a 36-23 lead heading into the half.
The third quarter proved to be the difference-maker in this one, as the Pioneers outscored the Trail Blazers 30-15 to take a convincing 66-38 advantage that MCLA could not overcome. Przygoda led this scoring wave, netting 14 points and seven rebounds in the third quarter alone.
Senior guard
Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) was also a big part of this win, as she finished the afternoon with 15 points and a game-high five assists. DeMarco also dished out five assists in addition to her nine points on the afternoon.
Junior guard
Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) matched DeMarco with nine points and grabbed six rebounds in the process, while Soriano netted eight points on two 3-pointers and one basket.
Utica advances to 4-1 with this win, and it will continue its six-game road trip against SUNY Delhi this Tuesday at 4 p.m.
