Women's Basketball Tops Delhi in 99-34 Season-Opening Rout

Utica, NY - The Utica College women's basketball team notched an extremely impressive showing in its home opener, topping the SUNY Delhi Broncos by a score of 99-34 Saturday afternoon. This outing was the definition of a collective effort, as the Pioneers limited the Broncos to 10 points or less in three of the four quarters while four UC players finished in double figures in scoring.

UC scored 18 unanswered points in the first quarter to take a convincing 20-2 advantage early on in this contest. The Pioneers finished the first quarter with a 34-8 lead, and they would ride this momentum for the rest of the game to secure the victory.

The Utica College front court proved to be lethal throughout this game, as Sophomore Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) fell two rebounds short of a double-double with game-highs in boards (eight) and points (19)

Senior Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) was also very effective all afternoon, posting a game-high seven assists while also adding 15 points.

A crucial difference-maker in this one was the 3-ball, as Utica knocked down eight shots from behind the arc while Delhi was only able to convert on two. Senior guard Marissa Woods (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) led the Pioneers with a game-high three 3-pointers. She finished the game with a career-high 10 points as well.

The Pioneers also flourished on defense, translating 23 total turnovers into 16 points on the other end of the court.

Freshmen Kristine Miller (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook), Julia Rotando (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane), Emily Allard (Fletcher, VT/Bellows Free Academy) Cassie Chalon (Norwich, NY/Cato-Meridian) and Kaitlyn Furner (Hubbardsville, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) all recorded first-career buckets for the Pioneers, with Miller leading the pack with six rebounds in her first-career start.

UC advances to 1-0 with this win, and the team will have a brief two-day break before hosting SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Brooks Miles and Staff Appreciation game.
