UTICA, NY- Nationally ranked No. 1 Elmira College pulled away in the third period as it handed the Utica College women's hockey team a 5-2 loss Friday afternoon in UCHC Conference action.

The Soaring Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 1:40 of the first period as Maddy Jerolman put in her 13
th of the year, off assists from Eliza Beaudin and Emma Crocker. Utica responded just over halfway through the period when freshman
Maddie Paydos (Simsbury, CT/Vermont Academy) poked in a loose puck in the crease for her fourth of the year.Â
Nicole Johnson (North Easton, MA/Holderness) and
Caley Susitti (Hartland, WI/Milwaukee Jr. Admirals) were credited with assists on the equalizer.Â

The Pioneers took the lead just four minutes into the second as
Rebecca Brown (Steamboat Springs, CO/Norwich University) deflected a point shot by
Danielle Haasbeek (Grand Forks, ND/Balmoral Hall) for her team-leading 12
th of the year. Freshman
Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) also picked up an assist on the power play tally.Â

Elmira responded at 11:12 when Jerolman threw a puck towards the net that bounced off a body in front and ended up in the net for her second of the day. Maddie Evangelous and Meg Lahey picked up assists on Jerolman's 14
th goal of the season.Â

Elmira regained the lead at 14:24 of the second as it capitalized on a power play opportunity. A clearing feed from Lahey took a bad bounce and hopped over the stick of a Utica defender right on the tape to Beaudin, who went in on a breakaway. Beaudin fired a shot over the glove of Utica goalie
Bria Reilly (Hamden, CT/Brewster Academy) for her 11
th of the season.Â

The Soaring Eagles tacked on two more scores in the third period to put the game away. Evangelous found the back of the net with one of her own, while Shannon Strawinski capped off the scoring.Â

Utica was 1-for-2 on the power play, while Elmira was 1-for-6 with the man advantage. Reilly made a career-high 41 saves, while her counterpart, Stephanie Martin, had 12 saves for the visitors.

The teams wrap up the season series Saturday in Elmira. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
