Women's Lacrosse Pulls Out a Close Win at Home

Utica, NY – The Utica College women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 to start the season on Friday, defeating New Paltz 10-9 at home. Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) led the way with three goals and one assist, while freshman Lexi Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) finished with three goals as well.
 
Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) got things started in the first half, scoring off of an assist from Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) just 2:17 into the contest. On the next possession New Paltz tied the game up at 1-1. The Pioneers would respond with four unanswered goals to seize a 5-1 lead with 12:07 left in the first half. However the visiting Hawks would even the score going into halftime.
 
New Paltz would go on to take a 6-5 lead early on in the second half, earning its first lead of the game. Freshman Jessie Biegel (Ridge, NY/Longwood) would tie the game back up with the first collegiate goal of her career. Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) would then give UC a two-goal edge, scoring back-to-back goals. Despite giving up three more scores on the day, the Pioneers were able to maintain its slim lead to secure the one-goal victory.
 
Lexi Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) not only finished with three scores, but also put forth effort by grabbing four groundballs and securing six draw controls. Lauren Wolff (Peabody, MA/Peabody) made two assists and snagged four groundballs as well. Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) recorded one goal, two assists, and led the team with five caused turnovers.
 
Goalkeeper Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) secured her second win between the pipes, making seven saves in the process. The Pioneers begin the year 2-0 for the first time since the 2013 season.
 
Rachael Purtell, Tara Bovich, and Amy Hofer each tallied two goals for New Paltz, as the team begins the year 0-1. Goalie Haley Timarky made five saves in the loss.
 
Utica will return to action on Tuesday, as the team will travel to take on Skidmore College. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
