Clarkson Hangs on to Down Women's Lacrosse

POTSDAM, NY- Despite scoring five goals over the last 13:15 of regulation, the Utica College women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-9 decision to host Clarkson University in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
 
With the loss, Utica drops to 2-1 on the young season.  The Pioneers look to rebound on Tuesday as they travel to Regis College.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
 
Clarkson jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first 12:17 of the game, thanks in part to a hat trick by Katie Seargeant.  The Pioneers responded with a pair of goals to end the first half trailing by two scores.  Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS), Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville), and Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) each had a goal in the first half. 
 
The Golden Knights once again came out flying to start the second stanza as it scored six of the first seven goals in the second half.  Utica scored three goals in 1:06, off the sticks of Scarpinella and Palmer and one by freshman Addison Green (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) to cut the Clarkson lead to 11-7 with just over 12 minutes remaining.  The home team added insurance goals at 9:58 and 6:46, before Scarpinella and DuMont capped off the scoring for the game.
 
Scarpinella led the Pioneers with three goals on the day, while Palmer had two goals and one assist and sophomore Lauren Wolff (Peabody, MA/Peabody) had one goal and two assists. Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Noelle Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford) each had one assist as well.
 
Junior Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) had 13 saves in the loss, while her counterpart, Samantha Gladd finished with eight saves.  Junior Devon Burri (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) led Utica with three caused turnovers and she shared the team-lead with four ground balls.
