Marywood's Big Third Quarter Upends Utica

SCRANTON, PA – The Utica College men's lacrosse team outscored host Marywood 4-3 in the final quarter, but it was not enough to overcome a 10-7 third quarter deficit, as the Pioneers lost 13-11 in non-conference action in Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon. Utica freshmen James Daniele (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) and John Avery (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) each registered four points to pace the Pioneers.  Daniele distributed a team-high four assists, while Avery added three goals and one assist in the loss.

The Pioneers record moved to 2-3 overall and they have now dropped two in a row for the first time this season.  UC returns to action on the road Saturday when it travels to Castleton to take on the Spartans at 3 p.m. in Vermont.

Tyler Giachinta (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) chipped in with one goal and two assists, while Dale Wagner (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) added three goals of his own.  Craig DiSanto (Montebello, NY/Suffern) posted two goals while Jared Smaldon (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Zach Duby (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) each added one tally.

Michael Foresti (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) had a team-high seven ground balls and caused two turnovers for the UC defense.  Kevin Parisi (Glenwood, NY/Vernon Township) also chipped in with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Harrison Bower (Northport, NY/Kings Park) stopped eight shots in the loss for Utica. Ryan Boshart (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) came on in relief of Bower and posted six saves for the Pioneers.  Connor Reed made 13 stops in net for the Pacers.

After falling into an early 2-0 hole, the Pioneers shook off the bus legs midway through the first quarter when senior captain Tyler Giachinta (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) found the back of the net off an assist from James Daniele (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) to cut their deficit in half.  Giachinta kept the ball rolling as he found Craig DiSanto (Montebello, NY/Suffern), who netted the game tying goal with 2:38 to go in the first quarter to send the contest to the second tied at 2-2.

UC's John Avery (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) put the Pioneers on his back in the second quarter as he netted all three of his goals in the 15 minute stretch to hand the visitors a 5-4 lead as the halftime horn sounded.

Marywood's hot start to the third quarter proved to be the difference in the contest.  The Pacers rattled off six consecutive goals in less than ten minutes to take a convincing 10-5 lead with 2:40 to go in the quarter.  However, the Pioneers would not go down without a fight and found the back of the net twice before the end of the third to make the score 10-7.  Dale Wagner (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) and Jared Smaldon (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) each registered a goal in the final 2:24 of the third for the Pioneers.

UC outscored Marywood 4-3 in the final 15 minutes, including two goals in a span of less than a minute down the stretch, but the comeback bid fell shot as the home team came away with a two goal victory.  Wagner netted two of his three goals in the fourth, while DiSanto and Duby also scored in the fourth.

Zach Vaughan led the way for the home team with five points on four goals and one assist.  Eric Morin posted three goals and added two helpers. Zach Bradbury went 16-for-26 on face-off chances for the Pacers.
