Clinton, NY – The Utica College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader against RIT on Saturday, falling to 3-11 overall on the season. The RIT Tigers won with final scores of 8-2 and 12-4, improving to 5-8 overall.
Game 1
Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) went 2-for-4 in game one of the set with one RBI and one stolen base. UC's catcher,
Charles McAllister (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) connected for two hit as well in his three plate appearances.
Griffin Baur (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) (1-3) received the losing decision as Utica's starting pitcher in this one, striking out five RIT hitters and allowing three earned runs.
Jake Cavanagh (Plainville, NY/King Phillip Regional) entered in the six inning as a reliever, giving up three runs and earning two strikeouts.
The game was tight early on, with the Tigers holding just a one-run lead heading into the 5
th inning. However, RIT busted the game wide open with two, 2-RBI home runs in the 5
th and 6
th innings to take a 5-0 lead entering the final inning. The Pioneers finally got on the board in the 7
th thanks to a Quinlan single, but a two-run effort in their final at bat was not enough.
Game 2
In the second match of the doubleheader,
Maki Medici (Latham, NY/Shaker) went a perfect 3-for-3 in the batters box and pushed two runs across for UC.
Thomas Giglio (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) was entered into the lineup as the designated hitter for the Pioneers, batting 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Both
Kiernan Briggs (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) and
Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) connected for a double, registering the team's only extra-base hits on the day.
Jonathan Hardy (Clinton, NY/Clinton) (0-4) struck out three RIT players in just over three innings of work on the rubber.
Mark Spina (Frankfort, NY/Frankfort-Schuyler),
Brendon Sarnowski (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), and
Brian Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) all entered the game to pitch in relief, combining for five earned runs and five strikeouts.
RIT's offense was consistent all game at the plate, scoring at least one run in six different innings. After trailing 1-0 after the first, the Pioneers' two-run at bat in the second gave them their first lead of the afternoon. However, the firepower from the Tigers was too much to keep pace with on the scoreboard.
For the day, UC was out-hit by RIT 23-16 with the teams drawing with three errors in the field apiece. Nevertheless, the Tigers walked away with two wins over Utica at Hamilton College's Loop Road Baseball Complex.
The Pioneers return to the field on Wednesday for a road trip to take on Wells College for a one game outing. This non-conference game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
