Late Inning Rally Comes Up Short for Utica

ONEONTA, NY – The Utica College baseball team rallied with two runs in the final two innings, but the comeback bid proved to be too late as host Oneonta State earned a 5-2 victory in non-conference action on Tuesday night.

UC's Christopher Ramsundar (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) singled home Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) in the eighth inning to make it 3-1 headed into the bottom half of the inning.  Oneonta plated two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a four run lead, 5-1, into the ninth inning.  A Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River) double to left center scored Kiernan Briggs (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) in the top half of the ninth inning to make it a three run ball game, but that was all the Pioneers could muster in the 5-2 loss.

Leviton shined on offense for Utica, totaling three of the Pioneers' five hits on the day.  Zach McGettigan (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) and Ramsundar accounted for the Pioneers other two hits in the contest.  Utica snapped a four game winning streak and saw its record move to 9-15 overall on the season.  UC turns right back around on Wednesday when it travels to nearby SUNY Polytechnic for a non-conference contest at 3 p.m.

Oneonta's record improved to 14-16 on the season.  The Red Dragons totaled nine hits on the afternoon, including a 2-for-3 day at the plate for Lazaro Moralez.  Vincent Prisco totaled a game-high two RBIs for Oneonta, including a key RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the score 4-1.

The Pioneers pitched by committee and received a solid outing to start the ball game from Taylor Hartman (Galway, NY/Galway).  Hartmann went 4.0 strong innings and allowed just one run while striking out three.  Mark Spina (Frankfort, NY/Frankfort-Schuyler) relieved Hartman on the mound and ate up 3.0 innings while striking out three as well.

Six different pitchers toed the rubber for Oneonta, including Dean Langman, who picked up the victory after pitching 4.0 innings of one-hit ball. Langman struck out four in the win.
