UC Brings it All Together in Local Showdown

MARCY, NY – The Utica College baseball team scored 13 runs on 13 hits, and used eight different pitchers to combine for 11 strikeouts and a two-hitter, as the Pioneers rolled to a 13-2 victory over host SUNY Poly on Wednesday afternoon. Utica freshman Zach McGettigan (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) continued his recent tear as he went 3-for-6 at the dish with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Senior Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) continues to cement his legacy as the most decorated hitter in the history of the program as he posted a 4-for-6 day with three RBIs and two runs scored.  Maki Medici (Latham, NY/Shaker) continues to acclimate in his first season of collegiate ball as he went 3-for-5 at the dish with one RBI and two runs scored.
The Pioneers have won five of their last six and improved to 10-14 overall on the season. UC returns to the diamond on Friday when it travels to Elmira College for the first of a key three game conference series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The Pioneers truly pitched by committee as eight arms toed the rubber in the victory.  Timothy Horodnick (Durhamville, NY/VVS), Jonathan Hardy (Clinton, NY/Clinton), Michael Canino (Highland, NY/Highland), Griffin Baur (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills), Haydn Demers-St. Hilaire (North Lawrence, NY/St. Lawrence Central), Sean Morris (Califon, NJ/Voorhee), Jake Cavanagh (Plainville, NY/King Phillip Regional) and closer Joe Palmieri (West Islip, NY/West Islip) each pitched at least one inning in the contest.  Baur and Hardy each struck out two, while Palmieri struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory for UC.

The Pioneers fell into an early 2-1 hole in the third inning, but the bats came alive in the middle innings as the Pioneers plated seven runs over the course of the fourth and the fifth.  McGettigan singled and scored Kiernan Briggs (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) to knot the score at 2-2 and the flood gates opened.  Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS), McGettigan, Quinlan, Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame), Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) and Maki Medici (Latham, NY/Shaker) all crossed home plate in the two inning stretch to put the Pioneers on top 8-2.

Quinlan singled down the left field line in the seventh, scoring Tiffin, to give UC a seven run lead, 9-2.  Utica added four more runs in the top half of the ninth inning to seal the victory.  McGettigan and Quinlan each posted an RBI in the ninth, while Christopher Deguilla (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) posted a sacrifice fly to account for the final run of the contest for Utica.

Tiffin, Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) and Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) each added one hit for the Pioneers on the day.
