UC Heads to Elmira For a Three Game Set

UTICA, NY - Fresh off of a 13-2 win over crosstown rival SUNY Poly, the Utica College baseball team will look to carry momentum from Wednesday's win into their weekend series on the road at Elmira College's Dunn Field. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. and then a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out: Down 2-1 entering the fourth inning, the Pioneers offense came alive with four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, one in the seventh and four more in the ninth to take down SUNY Poly on the road 13-2. Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) and Zach McGettigan (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) accounted for seven of the Pioneers 13 hits and six of the team's nine RBI while eight UC pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter.

Tiffin on Top: Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) earned himself Empire 8 Conference baseball player of the week for April 8-14 for his 9-for-22 showing at the plate with ten RBI, four of which coming on a grand slam, in five games. The senior also just went 1-for-3 at the dish against SUNY Poly with three runs scored and an RBI. Tiffin recently eclipsed the 100 career games played mark and now needs just five more hits to become the 14th player in program-history to reach 100 hits. He has 67 career runs scored and 48 RBIs.

Silver Sluggers: Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) and Maki Medici (Latham, NY/Shaker) have been tough outs at the plate all season as both remain top-10 in the conference in batting average. Quinlan is second hitting .398 while Medici is 10th hitting .347. Tiffin also finds himself as one of 24 players in the E8 with an average over .300 as he's .306 at the plate this season. Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River) is on the brink of .300 as the junior owns a .296 batting average.

Shining Sophomores: Joe Palmieri (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and Brendon Sarnowski (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) have been nothing short of efficient for the Pioneers pitching staff this season. Palmieri has made eight relief appearances hurling 10 innings while allowing just two earned runs and posting a conference leading five saves. His 1.80 ERA is fifth in the conference. Sarnowski has made eight appearances as well this season while making one start for UC. In 18.1 innings, Sarnowski owns a 1-0 record and his 1.96 ERA is seventh in the conference.

Ring 'em Up: Strikeouts have been anything but a rarity for Griffin Baur (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) this season. With a 2-4 record and solid 3.97 ERA, the junior also finds himself tenth in the E8 with 33 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched. He recorded 34 strikeouts in all of last season and 36 in 2017. With 103 career strikeouts, Baur is now seventh all-time in program history and needs seven more strikeouts to enter the top-five. With 25 careers starts, Baur is also fourth all-time in program history in career games started.

Golden Glove: Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River) is just one of five qualified Empire 8 players that have yet to record an error this season. The South River, NJ native has been perfect in the field with 86 putouts and six defensive assists.

Scouting Elmira: The Soaring Eagles will enter the weekend series with a 4-22 overall record and a 1-10 record in the Empire 8. They're fifth in the E8 posting a team batting average of .257 while ranking sixth in the conference with a team ERA of 7.03. Elmira likes to run when they get on base as they lead the conference with 37 stolen bases in 49 attempts. The bulk of their offense comes from Harrison Zambarano, who is top-10 in the E8 with 31 hits, 11 doubles, three home runs and a .510 slugging percentage.

Against Elmira: The two teams are 6-6 in the all-time series with the Pioneers taking the series last year two games to one. In the final two games of the series last year, the Pioneers offense showed out with a 15-5 win followed by a 14-8 win. UC also owns a 3-2 record when facing Elmira on the road.

Looking Ahead: The Pioneers will have a quick turnaround following their weekend set against Elmira as they will travel to Cobleskill on Monday to take on SUNY Cobleskill in a doubleheader. Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
