Softball Drops Pair to Fisher

UTICA, NY- The Utica College softball team dropped a pair of games to defending Empire 8 Conference Champion, St. John Fisher College Sunday afternoon.  The Cardinals won the first game 7-1 and then went on to take game two 12-9.  Junior Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) was 6-for-9 on the day with four RBIs.

Utica 1, St. John Fisher 7- Game One Final
The Cardinals held just a 1-0 lead through five innings but they used three runs in both the sixth and seventh to take a commanding 7-0 lead.  Utica was able to plate one run in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little, too late as Fisher picked up its third straight conference win.

Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) led Utica going 3-for-4 in game one and she drove in the Pioneers' lone run of the game.  Madison judge, Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck High School), Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland), and Sara Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) were each 1-for-3 in the loss.

Gabriella Caccamo (Suffern, NY/Suffern) and Alyssa Samborin (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) combined for five strikeouts, with Caccamo shouldering the loss as she gave up three earned runs in 5.1 innings of work.

Utica 9, St. John Fisher 12- Game Two Final
The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, but the Pioneers responded with five runs of their own to head into the third knotted at 5-5.  The Fisher bats stayed hot as the Cardinals scored six runs over the next two innings.

Trailing 12-7 entering the bottom of the seventh, Utica looked to rally.  The Pioneers scored two runs to come within three.  With two outs and the tying run at the plate, Fisher was able to force a ground out to hang on for the win.

Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) once again led the Pioneers at the plate as she went 3-for-5 and totaled three RBIs, while seniors Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Hayley Fredericks (Suffern, NY/Suffern) were each 2-for-5. Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck High School) was 2-for-3 with a team-high three runs scored.  Sara Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), Megan O'Keefe (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central), and Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland) also had hits.

The Pioneers drop to 8-12 (1-5 Empire 8) on the season.  They return to action Tuesday as they host Ithaca College. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
