ONEONTA, NY - The Utica College women's soccer team claimed a share of the Erinn Brozman Cup championship, and made some history while doing it on Saturday. Backstopped by a record setting performance in goal, the Pioneers got a goal in each half and prevailed over future Empire 8 opponent Keuka College by a 2-0 score at Hartwick College's Elmore Field.
Utica is 2-0 to start the season, while Keuka drops to 0-2.Â
The story of the day stood between the goal frame for the Pioneers. Senior keeper
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) saw thirteen Keuka shots land on target for the day, and she stopped every single one of them for a second straight clean sheet to open the season. Even more impressively, Wagner's third save of the afternoon was the 427th of her career, surpassing former Pioneer keeper Melissa Diana for the most saves in program history. The previous record had stood for over twenty years. Wagner now stands atop that list with 437 stops as she embarks on the remainder of her senior season.
While Wagner kept Keuka silent on the scoreboard, Utica turned to a pair of trusted veteran players to get the offensive support the team needed to sweep the weekend.
Utica struck first in the 31st minute when the always dangerous
Mikayla Blumenstock (Poland, NY/Poland) ended up with the ball at her feet. Veteran defender
Carly Craft (Ellenville, NY/Ellenville) and newcomer
Eliza Ericson (Beacon, NY/Beacon) set the table for the Pioneers' senior striker on a through ball, and Blumenstock punched it home for her second goal of the season. The goal stood as the difference-maker through halftime as the Pioneers enjoyed a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneer lead expanded even further as two others teamed up to record points in a second straight game. After scoring on a penalty kick on Friday,
Kierra Caissey (Gardner, MA/Gardner) netted her first goal during the run of play this season in the 72nd minute. On a free kick from 25 yards out, the ball floated into the box to Caissey, who headed the ball to the back of the cage.
Summer Gagnon (Manchester, NH/Manchester) notched the assist on the vital insurance goal.
Caissey led Utica with three shots attempted, with two of them landing on goal. Morgan Fuller and Grace Wolf had two shots apiece for the Wolves. The Pioneers were granted two corner kicks during the match, and were not credited with an offside during the 90 minute run of play this evening.
Utica will be back in action on Tuesday for their first home match of the season. The Pioneers will host Buffalo State at 7 p.m. under the lights at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
