UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's soccer team kept its shutout streak alive as it downed visiting Buffalo State 1-0 in overtime Tuesday evening at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Junior
Kierra Caissey (Gardner, MA/Gardner) headed home the game-winner 5:13 into the first OT to lift the Pioneers to victory.
Senior
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy), who recently became the College's career saves leader, stretched her season-opening shutout streak to 275:13 as she recorded her third straight clean sheet. Wagner has now recorded a shutout in four of her last five games dating back to the Empire 8 Conference Tournament last season.
The Bengals controlled play in the first half as they outshot the Pioneers 9-0, but the game remained scoreless through 45 minutes of play. Both teams had their share of chances in the second half, but neither was able to net the go-ahead, sending the game to overtime.
After a Buffalo State foul on the right sideline, junior
Emma Workman (Salt Lake City, UT/East) lined up the free kick 30 yards out. Workman's centering feed was placed perfectly in the box where Caissey was able to head it home to commence the jubilation.
Wagner finished with 11 saves, while her counterpart, Taylor Carillo turned aside five shots in the loss. The Pioneers (3-0) are off to their best start since 2014. UC will return to action Friday as it hosts SUNY Canton. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
