Utica, NY - The Utica College women's soccer team grabbed its fourth-straight win of the season on Friday. The Pioneers turned in a dominant performance by shutting out SUNY Canton by a score of 4-0.
This marks the first time that the Pioneers have won four straight games to start the season since 2012. This is the fourth time in program history that the program has achieved this mark.
Â
Three different Pioneers found the back of the net this evening. Junior
Kierra Caissey (Gardner, MA/Gardner), senior
Mikayla Blumenstock (Poland, NY/Poland) and freshman
Jenna Keeman (Douglas, MA/Douglas ) each had one goal apiece.
Â
The stellar defense also continued for the Pioneers tonight, as they continued to pitch a shutout of their opponents for a fourth consecutive match. This marks the first time in program history that UC has not given up a single goal over four-game span. That success is due in large part to Senior goalkeeper
Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy). She broke the program save record in the second match of the year against Keuka College, and padded that record with 11 saves last time the team took the field against Buffalo State on Tuesday night. This evening, thanks to a tremendous back line effort, Wagner did not have to do as much work, notching only one save on the evening in a partial outing while
Emily Hill (Watertown, CT/Watertown) logged some time in relief.
Â
The Pioneers set the tone early on in this match offensively, as Caissey recorded the first goal of the game and her fourth of the season on a centering pass from Blumenstock to give her team an early 1-0 lead in the 23
rd minute.
Blumenstock kept her stat line moving less than five minutes later. She scored her third goal of the year in the 28
th minute on a cross from junior
Emma Workman (Salt Lake City, UT/East). Caissey added her second goal of the match in the 40th minute, with a top shelf laser from 25 yards out to give the Pioneers a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into the half.
Â
The final Utica College goal came in the 80th minute, where
Jenna Keeman (Douglas, MA/Douglas ) recorded her first goal as a Pioneer on a rebound created on a free kick from
Lauren MacDonald (Poughquag, NY/Arlington).
Â
Overall, The Pioneers outshot the Kangaroos 21-3 en route to their fourth consecutive win to start the 2019 campaign. This year's team is currently chasing history. The only other team in the history of the program to start the season with more than four-straight wins was the 1998 team that started the season with a 6-0 record.
Â
Utica College will have a chance to move one step closer to that milestone on Friday, September 13
th, as it travels to SUNY Potsdam. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
