Conkin Leads UC to E8 Victory in Offensive Showcase

Box Score UTICA, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team claimed its first Empire 8 Conference win of the season, defeating Elmira College handedly, 84-34. The victory was highlighted by a four minute period when Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) could not miss, sinking six buckets from behind the arc.

The Pioneers trailed just once, finding themselves down 6-5 two minutes into the contest, but were quickly resurrected by a Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) free throw. After one quarter, they lead by four points, 15-11.

Quarter two is when the wheels began to fall off the Elmira train, as UC allowed just four points throughout the whole 10 minute stanza. The hosts outscored them 19-4, led by Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) who had seven points on two field goals and a made trey. Utica owned a healthy 19-point buffer heading into halftime.

The second half of play was slightly more competitive, despite the Pioneers ability to maintain its 20-point lead over the span. The Soaring Eagles shortest deficit came with 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter, as they were able to post a three-point bucket to trail by 17. UC was quick to extend its lead back to 20 as Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) collected a trey of her own to lead 51-31 heading into the final quarter.

The reign of terror, otherwise known as the time period between 9:06 and 5:43 when Conkin went off, scoring six three-pointers, only broken up by a pair of DeMarco free throws. It seemed as the senior could not miss from the arc, finishing the day an impressive 7-for-11. She led the team in points with 28 and assists with 8, while adding three rebounds.

Przygoda and Johndrow were also strong on offense, tying for a second-best 13 points. The former collected a team-high seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks, while the latter had six rebounds and one steal.

UC looks to carry its momentum through the weekend as it travels to Hartwick for a 4 p.m. contest on Saturday.
