UTICA, NY -- The Utica College women's ice hockey team fell to SUNY Canton by a margin of three goals on Wednesday evening, moving to 3-7 on the season.
It took no time at all before the visitors found themselves in the box, whistled for tripping inside the first four minutes. The Pioneers were unable to capitalize on the skater-up opportunity, as Lexi Stanisewski (Lawrence, MA/Boston Shamrocks) was sent to the box 1:34 after an unfortunate hi-sticking call at the blue line. No harm, no foul as UC successfully killed off the penalty.
Midway through the first Utica found itself on the penalty kill once again, this time as Maddie Paydos (Simsbury, CT/Vermont Academy) was called for interference at 12:10. It took the Roos 27 seconds to benefit on the man-up as Alexa Parigi was able to stop a Pioneer clear attempt at the blue line before skating up to take her shot. The puck took an unfavorable bounce and the deflected of a defender and into the back of the goal.Â
Utica again started the period on the power play as Canton was called for cross checking just over two minutes in, but was unable to put up any worthy shots. The Roos got their first power play of the period as Lindsey Winter (Minneapolis, MN/Armstrong Cooper) was sent to the sin bin at 5:20 for tripping.
The Pioneers executed a clean penalty kill with a few good saves, blocks and clears before the time ran down and they returned to full strength. They got a power play of their own at the exact middle point of the stanza on a slashing call. Despite going scoreless on the 5-on-4, they had a few good looks and a strong shot on goal by Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) as the penalty released.Â
Gifted a 5-on-3 with 3:21 remaining in the middle period, UC looked to get itself on the board, posting a stunning shot of a face off at the right circle with 12 seconds remaining on the power play. Holly Silva's (Boston, MA/Worcester Academy) shot was picked up by the Roo's goalie as their penalty expired.
The final period of play saw two goals by the bad guys, one nearing the halfway point, with the final coming with less than four minutes remaining in the contest. What was probably the Pioneer's best chance at a goal was owned by Caley Susitti (Hartland, WI/Milwaukee Jr. Admirals), who picked up a Ricki Haab (Stowe, VT/Stowe) rebound in front of the goal. Susitti attempted to place the puck in a nearly unguarded goal, but her shot whistled just wide.Â
Despite leading the shot count 29-28, Utica was unable to get a lucky bounce.Â
In goal, Bria Reilly (Hamden, CT/Brewster Academy) made 25 saves during her 59:49 played.Â
UC will hit the road for the first time in the New Year, traveling to Adrian, Mich. for a pair of non-conference contests with the Bulldogs of Adrian College. Saturday's contest is slated for a 7 p.m. puck drop, and Sunday's a 3 p.m. start time.Â
