Women's Hockey Upended by Naz in Gold Ribbon Game

UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's hockey team fell to visiting Nazareth College 3-1 in UCHC Conference action Wednesday evening.

The game was Utica's seventh annual gold ribbon game for childhood cancer awareness.  During the contest, the Pioneers wore special edition gold ribbon uniforms that were auctioned off to benefit the 13thirty Foundation, which helps adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in the area impacted by cancer live their best lives.

After a scoreless first period, Nazareth broke the deadlock at 7:17 when Makenna Wiljanen found the back of the net for her 10th of the year. Keeley Rose and Celena Rea assisted on the powerplay tally.

Utica responded at 17:07 of the second as freshman Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School) roofed a shot in the upper right corner of the net for her seventh of the season.  Freshman Holly Silva (Boston, MA/Worcester Academy) and senior Olivia Hirschy (Fort Wayne, IN/Culver Academies) assisted on the play.  Hirschy's tally was the 50th point of her career.

Naz went ahead at 8:11 of the third when Hailey Redders was sprung on a breakaway and buried a shot over the glove of Utica goalie Bria Reilly (Hamden, CT/Brewster Academy).  Stephanie Kubis had the assist on Redders' 14th of the year.

Naz put the game away as Rae put in one of her own, off a feed from Wiljanen for her sixth of the season.

Reilly finished with 36 saves on the evening, while her counterpart, Adrianna Brehm stopped 18 shots in the win.

The Pioneers look to bounce back Saturday when they host Oswego State.  Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
