UTICA, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team continues on a multi-game road swing as it travels to SUNY Potsdam on Saturday for a non-conference matchup. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. on the Potsdam campus.
Last Time Out: UC fell 19-2 at Hamilton College in the 10
th Annual Contineer Cup on Wednesday. The Pioneer goals were owned by
Dale Wagner (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) and
James Daniele (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville). Wagner's goal came early into the second quarter, while Daniele's goal opened the third quarter.
Jozef Korpics (Center Valley, PA/Moravian Academy),
Ryan Boshart (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and
Dylan Allen (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) all appeared in the crease, led by Korpics with an even 30 minutes played. Korpics stopped a team-best 11 Continental shots and picked up two ground balls in the process.
Scoring Efforts: Despite being silenced in Wednesday's outing,
Dylan Dunham (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) still continues to lead his squad in some offensive categories. Dunham has scored a team-best six goals on 11 shots on goal. He leads the team in points with seven, and also has one assist. Wagner currently boasts the team's best shots on goal percentage with a mark of 77.3 percent, with 17 of his 22 shots finding their way onto the net. He is also tied for first in assists on the team with
John Avery (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon). Both players have dealt out two helpers apiece.
Defensive Pickups: Jack Varian (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley Regional) and
Kevin Parisi (Glenwood, NJ/Vernon Township) have contributed 12 of the team's 39 caused turnovers. Each player has six. Three Pioneers have picked up nine ground balls this season between Varian,
Josh Bennett (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) and
Michael Foresti (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro).
Faceoff Warriors: Bennett has the best faceoff percentage on the team at 62.5 percent, which is good enough for seventh in the conference. The sophomore has gone 15-for-24 at the "x".
Controlling the Crease: Korpics has started in all three of Utica's contests for a team-best 147:59 played between the pipes. The freshman leads his squad in ground balls, picking up 13. His 35 saves and 11.67 saves per game help him to rank fourth in the Empire 8 in both categories.
Scouting Potsdam: The Bears are 1-1 on the season, and most recently took down SUNY Poly 13-12 on Wednesday. They were powered by a wild final four minutes of the contest, where they rallied to erase a three goal deficit and take the lead. Josh Huiatt led the way with his five goals, which included the game-tying goal with 2:51 remaining in the game. Tayte Murray, who had the game-winner, had a team-leading six points on two goals and four assists. In goal, Mike Nowak recorded his first relief win, allowing one goal and making one save in the final quarter. Ben Fuchs earned the start and recorded seven saves in 45 minutes played.
Battling the Bears: Potsdam owns a narrow 6-5 lead in the all-time series with Utica. In their last meeting, it was the Pioneers who came out on top with a 13-8 win at home. Daniele and Wagner each posted two goals and one assist, while Avery and
Jared Smaldon (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) had two goals apiece. Parisi posted a game-high three ground balls, while adding one assist.
Looking Ahead: Utica will return home on Wednesday as it hosts Marywood University for a 4 p.m. opening faceoff.
