GENESEO, NY- Geneseo used three third quarter goals as it downed the Utica College field hockey team in non-conference action Wednesday evening.
Â
Geneseo threatened in the final ticks of the first half as the Knights sent a ball into the circle that landed on the stick of Geneseo's Maggie Phipps. Phipps made a play towards the left post a slid a ball between the legs of Utica goalie
Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury), but senior
Taylor Oliver (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) was there to clear the ball off the line and keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Â
The Knights broke the deadlock at 40:02 when Katrina Clare scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Clare tucked in two more over the next 3:48 to give the Knights a 3-0 cushion.
Â
The Pioneers spoiled Geneseo's shutout hopes with 1:12 remaining in regulation as
Shannon Jedreicich (Deer Park, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) netted her eighth of the season. Off a penalty corner, Jedreicich inserted the ball to
Jeslyn Files (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) who fired a shot from the top of the circle. Jedreicich meanwhile ran towards the goal and was able to get a piece of it right before the shot reached Geneseo goalie Sarah Quinlan.
Â
Quinlan finished with seven saves in the win, while Chamberlain made 11 saves in the loss. Chamberlain is now just eight saves shy of tying Kells Casey '16 for most saves in a career at Utica.
Â
Chamberlain will go for the record next Wednesday as the Pioneers travel to Empire 8 foe, Hartwick College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
