ONEONTA, NY- The Utica College field hockey team scored two goals in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as Hartwick held on for a 4-2 win in Empire 8 Conference play Wednesday night.
With the win, Hartwick improves to 5-1 in the E8 and grabs sole possession of second place in the conference, while Utica drops to 4-2 and is now tied with Nazareth for third in the standings. UC will look to bounce back Saturday as it hosts Houghton College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Hartwick opened the scoring with just 28 second remaining in the first quarter as Leah Tolley put in a loose ball in front to give the home team the early lead. Just 1:06 into the second quarter, Hartwick extended its lead thanks to a goal by Ashley Tricarico.
The score remained the same until the 38
th minute when Sydney Gagnon scored off a corner thanks to a dish by Julie Ruzzi to put Hartwick up 3-0.
The Pioneers finally got on the board at 48:43 as
Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) deflected a shot by
Sabrina Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) for her ninth of the season.
Hartwick regained the three-goal cushion at 53:59 as Ruzzi buried a feed from Tolley off the corner to make it 4-1 in favor of the Hawks.
The Pioneers played until the final whistle as Whitehouse netted her 12 of the year as time expired.
Taylor Oliver (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) was credited with an assist on Utica's second goal.
Senior
Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) made seven saves on the evening. She is now just one save behind Kells Casey '16 for most saves in program history (390). Meanwhile, Madison Maddocks made 10 saves for Hartwick.
