UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat Saturday at the hands of defending Empire 8 Champion Russell Sage College in conference action. The Pioneers (7-6-1, 3-3-1 Empire 8) now face a must-win game against Hartwick next Saturday to ensure a spot in the Empire 8 Tournament.
The Pioneers put forth a valiant effort as they were forced to play down a player for the final 32 minutes of the game. The defense withstood increasing pressure by the Gators, until 74:33 when Natalie Ricci put in her fourth of the year on a long shot that sailed just under the bar. Emma Noel picked up the assist on the opener. Sage struck again just 3:15 later as Marissa Key buried a centering feed from Allison Basila for her second of the season.
Utica was able to get on the board with just 8.7 seconds remaining as
Sydney Cook (Waterville, NY/Waterville) slotted a penalty kick for her fifth of the year. Sophomore
Courtney Connolly (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) finished with nine saves in the loss, while Sage's Kierstin Lynch turned aside four shots.
The Pioneers face a tough match up on Wednesday as they travel to nationally ranked No. 11 Hamilton College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
