MORRISVILLE, NY- Sophomore
Carly Stefanini (Framingham, MA/Brooks School) scored the winning goal with just 3:54 remaining in regulation as the Utica College women's hockey team came away with a 1-0 win at Morrisville State Tuesday evening. With the win, the Pioneers head into the semester break with a 9-2 overall record.
Utica outshot the Mustangs 23-14 through two periods of play but had nothing to show for it as the teams remained scoreless after 40 minutes. The Pioneers finally broke the deadlock at 16:06 when Stefanini scored on the powerplay to give Utica the edge.
Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) and
Maggie Rylott (Cobourg, Ontario/West Northumberland) picked up the assists on Stefanini's seventh of the season.
That was all UC needed as the Pioneer defense led by sophomore
Angela Hawthorne (Santa Clara, CA/Meijer) shut the door. Hawthorne made 18 saves for her third shutout of the season. Her counterpart, Mak Ganje, finished with 30 stops for Morrisville.
The Pioneers will return to action on January 4 as they host current No. 1 ranked Middlebury College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
