Last Time Out: The Pioneers (8-2, 8-0 UCHC) will end 2021 perfect in UCHC play after a weekend sweep against Alvernia University. Friday saw the Pioneers go down early in the first period before putting on a clinic from the offensive end, beginning with a goal scored by
Maggie Rylott (Cobourg, Ontario/West Northumberland) early in the second. In the end, eight different Pioneers finished with a goal in the 8-2 victory. Saturday was more of the same as the Pioneers captured a 5-0 win over the Golden Wolves. Three of the goals were netted by
Alexa Carlon (Lakewood, NY/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) who recorded the first hat trick of her career.
Hat Tricks Galore: This past weekend, Carlon found a way to put three goals in the back of the net against Alvernia. This marked the sixth time a Pioneer has been able to record a hat trick this season. She also became the third Pioneer in just 10 games to accomplish such a feat, joining
Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) with three and
Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) with a pair.
Elite Defense: With UC's recent 5-0 win over Alvernia, the Pioneers finished off their sixth shutout of the season. This places Utica in a tie for first in the nation for the most team shutouts. Through its first 10 games this season, UC has only allowed 1.2 goals per game where they rank tenth in the nation and second in the UCHC.
Five-Consecutive: With
Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School) being named UCHC Co-Player of the Week on Monday it marked the fifth straight week a Pioneer has taken home the weekly honor. She follows
Brooke Hubert (Oceanside, NY/Minnesota State University- Mankato), Sloan, and two-time winner Santullo. Whitney finished the weekend with two goals and four assists as she returned to form at Alvernia. This brought her season totals up to four goals and six assists. With her four goals, Whitney has already matched her total from last season.
Meeting History: This matchup will mark the eighth meeting between the two programs all-time. Utica currently holds the series lead four games to three. This will be the first meeting for the programs since 2019 as UC attempts to avenge its last three meetings. In 2019, the Pioneers were held scoreless until late in the third period when
Morgan Leib (Farmington Hills, MI/Little Caesars) found the pass from
Holly Silva (Boston, MA/Worcester Academy) to put Utica on the board. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the Pioneers fell 6-1.
Scouting the Mustangs: The Mustangs (3-5-1, 1-3-1 NEWHL) enter this game after snapping their five-game losing streak after a 2-0 victory over William Smith College. Alana McDonald led the team to victory putting both goals in the back of the net for Morrisville. The Mustangs are currently led in scoring by a pair of sophomores including McDonald. At the top sits Rhys Brown who has found a way to tally a point in six of the nine games this season. Brown has totaled six goals and four assists on the year.
Up Next: Following Tuesday's match, Utica will take a brief pause from the action before returning to the ice in 2022. Their next game will be at home on January 4 against Middlebury College at 3 p.m.
