ROCHESTER, NY- The Utica College women's lacrosse team dropped its first of two match ups this season to rival Nazareth College, losing 9-13 in a designated non-conference game Saturday afternoon.
Utica outscored the Golden Flyers 6-5 in the second half, but a five-goal deficit after the first 30 minutes of play proved to be too much for the Pioneers to overcome. Junior
Lexi Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) led the way with four points on the day on two goals and two assists. Scaccia also had a game-high eight draw controls.
Senior
Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) had a team-high three goals, while
Addison Green (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and
Samantha DeCondo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each had one goal. Freshmen
Alyssa Pisano (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) and
Alyssa Drell (Mastic, NY/William Floyd) each netted their first collegiate goals in the loss. Senior
Lauren Wolff (Peabody, MA/Peabody) dished out two assists to move into third place on the College's career assist list with 49 for her career.
Despite holding a 16-8 advantage in draw controls and getting eight free positions compared to Naz's three, Utica was not able to capitalize on the extra possessions. Junior
Claire Frier (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) made nine saves while Katie Lawrence and Emma Prosak combined for three saves for the home team.
Brittany Nowak (Eden, NY/Eden),
Lexi Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), and
Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) led UC with three ground balls apiece, while
Aana Blaszka (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) caused a team-leading two turnovers.
The Pioneers (0-2) face another tough test Wednesday as they travel back to Rochester to face St. John Fisher College. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
