Cortland, NY - The Utica College baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Cazenovia, taking game one 5-1 before falling in game two 3-2.
Game 1
UC was sharp at the plate and on the mound in its 5-1 win. Starter Griffin Baur (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) led the charge on the mound as he went five innings while allowing no runs on two hits. The ace of the staff also retired seven batters via strikeout while surrendering two walks on his way to picking up his first win of the season. With the win, Baur ties the all-time record for wins by a Utica College pitcher which was set by Mark Dodge (1978-79) with 13. He also made his 32nd career start for the Pioneers, tying the all-time record Chris Jeffers set from 2011-14.
Justin McKenna (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum Senior) came on in relief of Baur in the sixth inning. The righty allowed one baserunner by way of a walk and finished his line with no hits or runs and chalked up two strikeouts. Senior Donovan Felder (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) closed out the game allowing the lone Wildcats run in the game en route to securing the 5-1 win.
The scoring started early in the game as Joe Battista (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) drove in Daniel Parslow (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) and John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) on a one out double to put UC ahead 2-0. Battista finished game one 1-2 with a walk and two RBIs. Son went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of extra-base hits and an RBI while Parslow finished the first game 2-4 with a run scored in the fourth inning. Zac Cronk (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Central Catholic) scored a pair of runs for UC as he came across home in the second inning by way of a Sean Vanegas (Bronx, NY/Mt. St. Michael) RBI triple and also scored the final Pioneers run in the sixth as Vanegas drove him in again with a single.
Game 2
Son's bat carried over into the second game as the utility player drove in Parslow on a one out single to give UC the early 1-0 lead. Battista drove in the only other Pioneers run in the third inning by singling home Parslow from second base. From there UC saw its early 2-0 lead collapse as the Wildcats scored the game's final three runs between the third and sixth innings.
Travis Grogan (Middletown, NY/Middletown) took the hill in game two for the Pioneers as unearned runs came back to haunt him and UC in the loss. Grogan completed five innings allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits. He also finished his afternoon with three strikeouts to one walk while picking up the loss.
Brendon Sarnowski (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) pitched a perfect sixth inning for the Pioneers as the righty struck out each of the three batters he faced. However, the offense left the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base in the seventh as the team fell 3-2 in game two. UC recorded four hits in game two as all four came from innings 1-3.
The Pioneers (2-1) are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Rochester to take on the Tigers at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Game one will be a regular nine inning game while game two will be seven innings.
