Pioneers Finish the Weekend With a Split at RIT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Rochester, NY- The Utica College baseball team completed its four game weekend with a series split against Rochester Institute of Technology.

Game 1

Game one belonged to Utica as they topped RIT 10-7 in the nine inning game.

James Roeschlaub (Auburn, NY/Auburn HS) took the bump in game one against a powerful RIT offense. He surrendered a pair of runs in the first, both off of singles, leaving the Pioneers in an early 2-0 deficit.

The UC offense picked up their pitcher in the 2nd inning by putting across five runs, giving Roeschlaub some breathing room. Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) started the scoring spree with a sacrifice fly to left which was followed by a two RBI single by Zac Cronk (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Central Catholic). Sean Vanegas (Bronx, NY/Mt. St. Michael) continued his solid weekend at the plate with a sacrifice fly prior to Daniel Parslow (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) scoring one on a single to center to round out the second.

The Tigers retook the lead in the home half of the second, however, on a pair of two RBI doubles by Chris Reilly and Luke McNamara, making it a 6-5 game.

Ryan Cardone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) knotted the game up at six in the third inning when he singled in Shamariah McCullough (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional). Cardone was the only Pioneer with multiple hits in the game as finished game one going 2-3 at the plate while driving in two runs, scoring twice and walking twice. McCullough finished the game 1-3 with three runs scored.

The lead change continued in the home half of the third inning on an unearned run that was driven in by a Randy Dodig single. Dodig finished as the leading hitter for RIT as he went 3-6 with an RBI. The third inning would be the final for Roeschlaub as he finished his line allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits while also striking out and walking four batters.

Tyler Catalfamo (Albany, NY/Colonie) relieved Roeschlaub and held the Tigers offense in check. He went three innings allowing no runs on three hits while striking out three and surrendering two walks on his way to picking up the win.

The score remained the same until the seventh when the Utica offense came back to life. Cardone singled home McCullough for the second time in the game before he himself scored on a throwing error two batters later, giving the Pioneers an 8-7 lead and would turn out to be the difference in the game. Later in the seventh John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) scored Vanegas from second on a single to left field. UC added an insurance run in the ninth as Cardone scored on a wild pitch, making it a 10-7 game.

Brian Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) finished the final three innings for UC as the senior didn't give up a run on the four hits he gave up. He struck out one Tiger and was credited with the save. The trio of Roeschlaub, Catalfamo and Dinnen pitched well under pressure as they held 16 RIT baserunners on base.

Game 2

The RIT offense responded to the game one loss with an 11-0 victory in the seven inning game two.

UC picked up eight hits in the game but couldn't manage a run as the team left 10 base runners stranded. Travis Grogan (Middletown, NY/Middletown) and McCullough accounted for four of the team's eight base hits as each finished with two.

Parslow started the game for the Pioneers as he went three innings deep while allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He also added three strikeouts and walks to his line while being credited with the loss in this game. Justin McKenna (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum Senior) tossed 1.1 innings for UC as he allowed the other six Tiger runs on four hits. Donovan Felder (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) and TJ Labayewski completed the other 1.2 innings on the bump, each surrendering one hit a piece.

Liam Barry pitched a complete game shutout for RIT allowing 11 base runners (eight hits, three walks) and retired five Pioneers via strikeout. Dodig had a perfect game two going 3-3 at the dish with a double and two RBIs.

UC returns to action next Friday when they take on Houghton four times in two days. The Pioneers will travel to Houghton for Friday's 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. games and then will open its season at home on Saturday when Houghton visits for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. games. Each of the four games will be non-conference matchups.
