Women's Hockey Fights Hard, But Falls at Elmira

PINE VALLEY, NY- The Utica College women's hockey team fell to host Elmira College 4-2 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference action Saturday afternoon at Elmira's Murray Athletic Center.

As in Friday's meeting, the teams were tied 1-1 after the first period. Once again Utica scored the game's first goal as Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) put in her own rebound for her third of the year at 11:41.  Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) and Maggie Rylott (Cobourg, Ontario/West Northumberland).

Elmira evened the score at 15:11 when Brooke McArdle netted an unassisted tally for her first goal of the season.

The Soaring Eagles came out flying to open the second period, scoring a pair of goals in the first 59 seconds of play to take a 3-1 lead.  First Mary McCafferty scored off a feed from Madi Morton just 14 seconds into the period.  Then it was Morton who netted one of her own off an assist by Devyn Gilman at the :59 mark of the second.

Sophomore Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School) got one back for the Pioneers at 6:15 when she put in a power play tally.  Freshmen Carly Stefanini (Framingham, MA/Brooks School) and Madison Novotny (Wesley Chapel, FL/Northwood School) had the assists on Whitney's third of the year.

Elmira regained the two-goal cushion at 7:36 of the final frame as Tristen Tolan netted her fourth of the year on the power play, assisted by McCafferty and Jenny Heath.

Utica rookie netminder Angela Hawthorne (Santa Clara, CA/Meijer) stopped 34 of 38 shots in the loss for Utica. Elmira netminder Elizabeth Hanson stopped 13 of 15 Utica shots to take the win.

With the loss, Utica drops to 3-5 (2-4 UCHC), while The Soaring Eagles remain perfect with a 5-0 record on the season.  The Pioneers look to bounce back next weekend against Wilkes University.  Utica will travel to Wilkes on Friday (5 p.m.) before both teams meet in Utica on Saturday (7 p.m.)
