Men's Lacrosse Gears Up For Sage Wednesday

UTICA, NY - The Utica College men's lacrosse team continues conference play as it hosts Russell Sage College on Wednesday, April 7th at 4 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

Off To A Good Start: The Pioneers are currently 3-0 with wins over Castleton, New Paltz, and Keuka. They are also 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference This marks Utica's first 3-0 start to the season since 2006. 

Last Time Out: The Pioneers played Keuka College on Saturday, and they started off strong - scoring twice in the first five minutes to set the tone, before overpowering the Wolves with a 6-1 second quarter to put the game away en route to a 16-9 win. The second half of the game was split evenly with two 3-3 quarters. Six players found the back of the net - John Avery (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) (four goals), Dale Wagner (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) (four goals), Dylan Dunham (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) (three goals), Chase Kaufman (Atlanta, GA/Riverside Military Academy ) (three goals), James Daniele (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville), and Nick Litzenberger (Freeville, NY/Cortland).  Six players recorded assists on the day - Gage Fiacco (Massena, NY/Massena), James Daniele (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville), Jack O'Shaughnessy (Knoxville, TN/Utica Notre Dame), Kevin O'Brien-Bruno (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco), Jacob Hyer (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) (two), and Dunham (three). Jozef Korpics (Center Valley, PA/Moravian Academy) had 11 saves in 52 minutes of work. 

Dunham Doubles Down: Senior attacker Dylan Dunham (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) led the team on Saturday, scoring three goals and picking up three assists. Daniele and Hyer each assisted on a goal. Dunham's second goal of the day marked his 50th career point. He is currently 4th on the team in points this season, with four goals and five assists for nine points. He has also picked up eight ground balls and caused four turnovers. Dunham is currently 5th in the conference for assists per game(1.67). 

Do It For Dale: Senior midfielder Dale Wagner (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) has been a force this season, scoring four goals in Saturday's game, for 11 goals in three games. Dunham and Hyer each assisted on a goal. Wagner currently leads the squad with 11 goals and one assist for 12 points. He leads the conference in shots per game(12.67), is tied for 1st in goals per game(3.67), and is tied for 4th in points per game(4.00). 

Quick Nick: Freshman midfielder Nick Litzenberger (Freeville, NY/Cortland) was too quick for Keuka, when he scored the opening goal in the first minute of play on the man-up. Nick is currently three for three in his appearances, with one goal per game this season. He also picked up one assist, for four points in three games. Litzenberger is 9th in the conference for shots per game(6.67).

Look Out For Avery: Junior attacker John Avery (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) started the day off strong on Saturday, scoring in the first five minutes of play, assisted by Gage Fiacco (Massena, NY/Massena). Avery remained strong, and scored once more in each quarter. Dunham picked up assists on two of those goals. Avery is 2nd in the conference in shots per game(11.00), 6th in goals per game(2.67), and 9th in points per game(3.33). Avery is 2nd on the team board with eight goals and two assists for 10 points. He has picked up eight ground balls and caused two turnovers. Avery is just five points away from his 50th career point. 

Strong Line of Defense: Sophomore goalkeeper Jozef Korpics (Center Valley, PA/Moravian Academy) was named E8 Goalkeeper of the Week after saving 11 of the 18 shots fired at him in 52 minutes of work in Saturday's game. This is his second award of the season, giving him this honor twice in a three-week period. Korpics leads the conference in save percentage(.672), and is 3rd in both goals against average(6.62) and saves per game(13.00). 

Parisi Plays Hard:
Junior defenseman Kevin Parisi (Glenwood, NJ/Vernon Township) led the defense on Saturday, picking up six ground balls and causing seven turnovers. In three games, Parisi has picked up 15 ground balls, and caused a team-best 18 turnovers. He leads the conference in caused turnovers per game(6.00). 

A First For Kaufman: Freshman attacker Chase Kaufman (Atlanta, GA/Riverside Military Academy ) found the back of the net three times in Saturday's game, marking his first career hat trick. His first goal was scored a man-down in the first quarter, assisted by Jack O'Shaughnessy (Knoxville, TN/Utica Notre Dame). Kaufman's second goal was scored in the first minute of the second quarter, assisted by Kevin O'Brien-Bruno (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco). Not five minutes later, Kaufman scored an unassisted goal to mark his hat trick. He is currently 5th on the team with four goals for four points.

What's Next: The Pioneers will hit the road for a 1 p.m. start time against Alfred University on Saturday.
