Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Rochester, NY - After taking down St. John Fisher on the road four days ago, the Utica College baseball team was swept by the Cardinals today at Dugan Yard. Fisher's bats couldn't be slowed down as they cruised to a 16-1 win while the Pioneers put up a fight in the 9-4 game two loss.
Game 1
The Pioneers picked up where they left off on Tuesday in Rochester as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning.
Joe Battista (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) recorded his 26th RBI of the season on a single to center field that brought home
Sean Vanegas (Bronx, NY/Mt. St. Michael).
However, the Cardinals offense erupted for 16 runs on 15 hits over the first four innings of the game as the team pulled away with a 16-1 lead. The big blow came in the 2nd inning when Fisher scored nine runs and sent 13 batters to the plate.
Battista, Vanegas,
David House (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden),
John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) and
John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) were responsible for all five of Utica's hits in the game.
Justin McKenna (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum Senior) had a noteworthy outing on the mound, completing two innings while allowing no runs on one hit as well as recording a strikeout and no walks.
Game 2
Neither team recorded a run throughout the first three innings of the game as Pioneers starter
James Roeschlaub (Auburn, NY/Auburn HS) went toe-to-toe with one of the top pitchers in the Empire 8, RJ Kuruts.
Roeschlaub, who is coming off a two-hit, 14-strikeout complete game shutout 11 days ago, allowed just one hit and one walk in his first three frames while setting down four of the first nine via strikeout.
For the third time in three games against the Cardinals the Pioneers found the board first.
Ryan Cardone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) belted his first career home run on a two-run shot to left field to give UC a 2-0 lead in the top of the 4th inning. Just as in game one, however, the Fisher offense responded back in the home half with runs of their own.
A two-run home run by the Empire 8 leader in long balls, Adam Zebrowski, and a three-run home run by James Murphy lifted Fisher to a 5-2 lead after four innings. Roeschlaub's day was finished following the inning as he went four full innings giving up five runs on six hits while striking out five.
After missing out on a two-out, bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the 7th inning, UC allowed four runs in the home half as they fell behind 9-2.
Michael Muentener (Fairview, NJ/Cliff Side Park) hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the 8th inning while
Jason Story (Hilton, NY/Hilton HS) added an RBI double in the 9th inning before Fisher recorded the final out one batter later to secure the 9-4 win.
Cardone,
Zac Cronk (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Central Catholic) and
John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) all recorded two hits at the plate while
Brendon Sarnowski (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) tossed a clean 1.2 innings as he allowed no runs or hits as well as recording a strikeout.
UC (13-13, 6-7 Empire 8) and Fisher (24-5, 15-1 Empire 8) will meet again tomorrow at the Utica College Baseball Field for another doubleheader. The front end is set to start at 1 p.m.
