UTICA, NY- The Utica College field hockey team scored with 2:31 remaining in regulation, but it was not enough as St. Lawrence snapped Utica's win streak with a 4-3 decision Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Utica got things going at 9:07 when
Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) put in her fourth of the season. What looked like a broken play off a corner turned into the scoring chance for the Pioneers.Â
Jeslyn Files (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) corralled the initial insertion and sent a ball in from above the arc. Freshman
Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) played it towards Scaccia who redirected it into the yawning cage.
Â
The Saints responded with two goals in 4:47 in the second quarter. First, Mckenzie Haberl netted her first of three goals on the afternoon. Then Anna Coyne put in a feed from Maggie Green for her first of the season to head into halftime with a 2-1 lead.Â
Â
St. Lawrence tacked on an insurance tally at 35:31 as Haberl's shot from the right of the post deflected off a Utica defender and in to make it 3-1 in favor of the visitors. UC got one back at 38:34 when
Sabrina Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) ran down the left-hand side and played a ball inside the near post for her team-leading seventh of the season.
Â
Haberl capped off her day with her team-best eighth goal of the season as she buried a feed from Jenny L'Hommedieu at 43:42.
Â
The Pioneers made it interesting as Mix put in her second of the season off an initial shot by
Jeslyn Files (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) off a penalty corner to pull Utica within one with under three minutes remaining. UC threatened to tie it up in the waning seconds, but St. Lawrence held on for its fifth win of the season.
Â
Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) finished with 12 saves, while her counterpart, Cara Vredenburg made five saves in the win.Â
Â
Utica looks to bounce back Saturday as it Hosts Russell Sage College. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
