Box Score 2 Utica, NY - The Utica College volleyball team returned to action on Saturday afternoon following a four set loss to Fredonia on Friday. The Pioneers dropped both matches on the day, losing its first match to SUNY Poly, 3-2, before falling to Plattsburgh St., 3-0.
Utica 2, SUNY Poly 3
The Wildcats took the first two sets, 25-22 and 26-24. Down 10-5 in the third set, UC came back to tie the set at 16. With the set tied at 20, Utica found a rhythm and thanks to two kills by
Caitlyn Curcurito (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), won the set 25-21
The Pioneers came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth set, going ahead by as many at nine points at one point (19-10). UC never trailed in the set as they druised to take it, 25-15. In the fifth and final set, Poly took an early 5-1 lead before Utica answered back with four points to even the score. From there, the Wildcats went on an 8-0 run to jump ahead 13-5. Now down 14-7, UC clawed back to make it a 14-13 set which led to a Poly timeout. Following the break, the Wildcats finished off UC with a kill to take the fifth set 15-13 and the match, 3-2.
Utica 0, Plattsburgh St. 3
With set one tied at 18, Plattsburgh was able to finish the set on a 7-2 run to claim a 25-20 win. The following set, the Cardinals took full control from the start, coming out on top, 25-12. The third set was once again all Plattsburgh. The Cardinals opened the set on an 11-5 run en route to never trailing once and taking the set 25-19 and the match, 3-0
Brianna Woods (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) led the Pioneers with six kills, followed by
Caitlyn Curcurito (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and
Kurstan Martin (Owego, NY/Tioga), both finishing with four.
Hannah Johnson (Murfreesboro, TN/Blackman) led Utica with nine assists while
Eleanor Cepiel (West Sand Lake, NY/Academy of Holy Names) and
Krystell Pappas (Owensboro, KY/Owensboro) finished with six digs apiece.
UC (0-3) returns to the court on Wednesday when they host SUNY Delhi. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.
