Oswego, NY - Coming off of its first loss of the season to Skidmore on Saturday, the Utica College men's soccer team tied with Oswego St. on Sunday afternoon, 1-1.
Both sides found shot opportunities early in the game, including an attempt by
Ramazani Juma (Utica, NY/Proctor) that was blocked (7:06) and one by
Patrick Hynes (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem) that sailed high (10:11). The Pioneers and Lakers failed to score in the the first period as UC held an 8-5 shot advantage
In the 57th minute,
Jacob Sherline (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead when he scored his first goal of the season with a header.
Austin McCarthy (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and
Byamungu Mugushu (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) were each credited with an assist on the goal.
With under six minutes left in regulation, the Lakers netted the equalizer which would ultimately send the game into overtime. UC attempted 13 shots in regulation, three on goal, while Oswego attempted 12, four on goal.
Foti Xidias (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) recorded three saves in regulation as well.
The Pioneers outshot the Lakers 2-0 in the first overtime while the Lakers ended with a 3-2 advantage in the second. Juma nearly put Utica ahead early in the first overtime with a shot that hit off the post. He also attempted seven of UC's 17 shots in the game.
UC (1-1-1) is back in action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday when the team travels to SUNY Potsdam. This will be the last of four straight road games to start the season.
