Box Score ALBANY, NY - Behind a
Kimedrick Murphy (Hudson, NY/Hudson) double-double and 57 points from the starting five, the Utica College men's basketball team re-entered the win column with a 66-61 win over the Russell Sage Gators.
Utica's offense regrouped after Saturday's struggles to come out with 37 points in the first half. Murphy was a force through the first 20 minutes, totaling nine points on 4-for-9 shooting from the paint and eight rebounds.
Chris Green (White Plains, NY/Alexander Hamilton) shot 4-for-8 from the floor for eight first half points while
Darius Hopkins (Tampa, FL/Seffner Christian) netted seven points. The Pioneers out-shot the Gators 48.5 percent to 32.3 percent in the first and bested Sage on the boards 25-14 for six second chance points.
Sage responded to UC's strong first half with a surgical second half of its own. The Gators netted a total of 40 points in the second half which helped the team crawl back to within five with under three minutes to play. With the score 62-59 in favor of Utica with 25 seconds to go, the Pioneers were left to ice the game from the free throw line. Green and Hopkins did just that, combining to go 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to hold off the Gators' comeback.
Murphy's night ended in a 1- point, 13 rebound double-double. Green led the Pioneers with 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting while Hopkins (11, 4-7 FG) and
Avery Coston (Kerhonkson, NY/Rondout Valley) (10, 3-6 FG, 2-4 3FG, 2-2 FT) also recorded double figures in points.
UC (10-3, 4-1 Empire 8) will be back in action on Friday at home against Alfred University. Tip-off from Miga Court will be at 7:30 p.m.
