ELMIRA, NY -
Cora Sawyer (New London, CT/New London) capped off an impressive fourth quarter comeback for the Utica College basketball team with her game-winner jumper with five seconds remaining to lift UC over Elmira College 67-65.
The Pioneers controlled the game early with a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second, however, it was the Soaring Eagles taking command with 23 points on 10-for-18 shooting. Utica was limited to 11 points leading into the break after just five field goals in the quarter with the score 37-32 in favor of Elmira.
After Elmira opened its lead up to 11 points through the first three minutes of the third, UC brought the game back within six entering a thrilling fourth quarter.
With the Soaring Eagles ahead by 10 with 7 minutes left, the Pioneers began to crawl back within striking distance.
Krissy Geraci (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) started the 19-7 run with a layup which was followed by a pair of
Hannah Stack (Dogleville, NY/Dolgeville) free throws to cut Elmira's lead to 58-52 with 4:20 left. Geraci converted on another layup on the team's next trip down the court before Stack went on to convert a three-point play to bring UC within one.
Another shot by Geraci gave the Pioneers a 59-58 lead with just over two minutes remaining and
Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) extended the lead to 61-59 after an Elmira free throw. A foul by
Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) set up Elmira for an and-one opportunity with 52 seconds left which was converted for a 62-61 Soaring Eagles lead. On the following possession, Sawyer converted her own and-one to regain the lead for Utica at 62-61.
Now 65-62 Utica, Johndrow committed a foul on an Elmira three-point shot which resulted in all three free throws being made. UC took possession in its own territory with 11 ticks left in regulation. Sawyer took the inbounds pass and created her own look from the opposite elbow and sank the open shot with five seconds left. Elmira's final attempt missed everything as the Pioneers completed its comeback quest 67-65.
Przygoda finished with a 15 point, 11 rebound double-double while Sawyer finished one rebound shy of a double-double herself with a team high 17 points and nine rebounds. Geraci added 16 points in 22 minutes and DeMarco put together six points and a team high five assists.
