Pioneers Split With Thomas

AUBURNDALE, FL - The Utica University baseball team split its doubleheader with Thomas College (ME) on Monday, dropping the first game 10-4 before taking game two 18-13.

Game 1
Thomas held a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the 4th inning. A solo home run by John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) and an RBI groundout by Noah Barber (Cortland, NY/Cortland) evened the game heading into the 5th.

After a scoreless 5th from both sides, Thomas put up five runs in the 6th and a pair in the 7th to carry a convincing 10-3 lead into the bottom of the final frame. Utica was shut down in order as the Terriers took the front end of the doubleheader, 10-4.

Ryan Cardone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), Joe Battista (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) and Son all had two hits in the game as well as an RBI.

Game 2
There was no shortage of offense out of either side in the second game as Thomas held a 4-3 lead after one inning of play.

While both teams added two more in the 2nd inning, the Pioneers exploded for six runs in the top of the 3rd thanks to a Jason Story (Hilton, NY/Hilton HS) solo home run and a three-run blast from Battista. Utica chalked up five more in the 4th inning with RBI's out of Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro ), Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) as the Pioneers held a 16-7 lead after four.

The Terriers attempted to mount a late comeback after scoring five runs in the bottom of the 6th to make it 16-13. However, Utica added two more runs in the top of the 7th to put the game out of reach and end the day with a series split.

May ended the game 4-for-6 with four RBI while Story's 4-for-5 outing also resulted in four RBI. Fosolo went 2-for-3 from the dish in the second game and Battista drove home three runs himself.

Utica (4-2) will remain at Lake Myrtle Field (Field 7) on Tuesday for a single nine inning game against Dickinson College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
