Box Score 2 FLEMINGTON, NJ - The Utica University baseball team scored 31 runs over 14 innings in its opening day doubleheader sweep of the Yeshiva University Maccabees. The Pioneers took game one 14-1 and the second game 17-1.
Game 1

Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) wasted no time making noise in his first game as a Pioneer. In his first at-bat with the team, May connected for a solo home run to give Utica a 1-0 lead two batters into its season. Starting pitcher
James Roeschlaub (Auburn, NY/Auburn HS) fell into some trouble in the Yeshiva half of the second after a clean first inning. The first two hitters reach base, giving the Maccabees runners on first and second with none away. However, Roeschlaub was able to escape the jam thanks to a flyout and back-to-back strikeouts to maintain the lead for Utica.
Michael Muentener (Fairview, NJ/Cliff Side Park) widened the gap in the bottom of the 2nd with a three RBI triple to left center field, putting Utica ahead 4-0. After
Zac Cronk (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Central Catholic) drove home
Noah Barber (Cortland, NY/Cortland) on a sacrifice fly in the 3rd,
John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) and
Joe Battista (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) each drove in a run in the 4th inning to extend the Pioneers' lead to 7-0.
The offense erupted for six more runs in the 5th inning with
Shamariah McCullough (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional), Muentener, May, Son and Barber all driving in at least one run. Utica chalked up one more run in the 6th frame while Yeshiva was able to score one in the 7th as the Pioneers cruised to a 14-1 win.
Muentener, May and Barber all recorded two hits on the afternoon with Muentener also driving in a team high four runs. May, Son and Barber each drove in a pair of runs in the win as well. Nine different Pioneers collected at least one of the team's 12 hits. Utica also stole five bases as a team.
Roeschlaub (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned the win after four shutout innings on three hits and striking out five of 16 batters faced.
Ryan Cardone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit relief while freshman
Kody Czternastek (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro ) finished the game allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts in his collegiate debut.
Game 2
Offense carried over into the second game as the Pioneers handled Yeshiva once again, 17-1.
After a clean top of the 1st inning out of freshman starter
Jack Krug (Amsterdam, NY/Canajoharie), the Pioneers gave the newcomer some breathing room with a four run 1st inning.
Michael Muentener (Fairview, NJ/Cliff Side Park) and
Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) reached base to start the inning, allowing
John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) to bring home Muentener on a ground-rule double before
Joe Battista (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) brought home May and Son with a two RBI single up the middle.
Ryan Cardone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) drove in Battista on a double with two away in the inning to put Utica up 4-0 after one.
In the home half of the 3rd inning with the Pioneers up 5-0,
Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) connected for a two-out, three-run homer to left to give the team an 8-0 lead. Yeshiva would find the board in the 4th inning by way of an RBI groundout but Utica responded with six runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 14-1.
The Pioneers went on to score three more runs in the 5th inning while the bullpen held strong throughout the rest of the game en route to a 17-1 win.
At the dish, Battista, Crossley and Cardone carried the way. The trio combined for 11 RBI with Crossley bringing home five, Battista four and Cardone two. Battista finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run while Cardone and Crossley each went 2-for-3.
Krug earned his first career win as a Pioneer after 4 innings of two hit, one run ball while sitting down six via strikeout.
Tyler Catalfamo (Albany, NY/Colonie),
Brian Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and
Jake Mangino (Sayville, NY/Sayville) each pitched one inning allowing no runs while Catalfamo and Dinnen retired each of the three batters they faced.
Utica (2-0, 0-0 Empire 8) will play another neutral site game on Wednesday at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY against Cazenovia College. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
