Hamilton Earns Upper Hand in Men's Lax Action to Retain Contineer Cup

UTICA, NY- The Utica University men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season as it fell to Hamilton College 13-5 in the battle for the Contineer Cup Tuesday evening at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
 
Despite the visitors scoring the first three goals of the game, Utica kept the score close through the first quarter as goals by Connor Costanza (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park ) and John Avery (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) less than a minute apart brought Utica within one after 15 minutes of play.
 
Hamilton turned up the pressure in the second quarter, outscoring Utica 5-0 to take an 8-2 lead into halftime.  The second half was more of the same as the Continentals picked up their first win of the season.
 
Avery added another goal and an assist, while Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, NY/Roundout Valley) and Kevin Parisi (Glenwood, NJ/Vernon Township) also found the back of the net.  James Daniele (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) and Gage Fiacco (Massena, NY/Massena) were each credited with an assist.
 
For the second game in a row, Parisi led the Pioneers in caused turnovers, this time racking up four caused turnovers and scooping up eight ground balls.  Ethan Brown (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) was also tough on the defensive end as he caused two turnovers and picked up six ground balls.
 
Sophomore Jon Goodspeed (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) had an impressive showing in net and kept the game close as he finished with a career-high 22 saves. His counterpart, Seamus Fagan totaled 12 saves.
 
Eight different players scored for Hamilton, led by Rowan Brumbaugh, who finished with four goals on the day.
 
The Pioneers remain home on Saturday as they host Moravian University.  Game time is 1 p.m.
