UTICA, NY - The Utica University women's tennis team has a busy week ahead with three matches this week. The team travels to Newburgh, NY to play Mount Saint Mary College (NY) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Pioneers then return home Saturday to face Nazareth College at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the week on the road against St. John Fisher University on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Last Time Out: The Pioneers fell in a conference match to Alfred University on Saturday, 9-0. After dropping the first two sets in close fashion 8-5 and 8-6 in doubles, Jackie Roberts (Herkimer, NY/Notre Dame) and Emily DePasquale's (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) comeback effort fell short 8-4 in the final set.
Season so Far: Emily DePasquale (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) continues her strong singles play as she is 2-1 on the season. Ellen Lyga (New Hartford, NY/Notre Dame) and Paetra Heeren (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) have seen success and are 2–1 as a doubles team and Emily DePasquale (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) and Jackie Roberts (Herkimer, NY/Notre Dame) are 1-0.
Scouting Mount St. Mary's (NY): The Knights are 1-4 this season after dropping back-to-back matches last week against Yeshiva University and Bard College. The team is 10-20 overall in singles play and is led in doubles by Victoria Valencia and Sadie McNair who sport a 2-1 record as teammates.
Nazareth College Preview: The Golden Flyers are 1-0 on the season as they defeated SUNY Geneseo 9-0 in their only match so far. Nazareth sent a few players to the Mary Hosking Tournament and will play in the ITA Regional Tournament this Friday and Saturday before coming to Utica on Sunday.
St. John Fisher Outlook: The Cardinals have started off hot and are 3-0 after beating SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, and Oswego State. The team will start conference play against Alfred on Saturday before hosting the Pioneers on Sunday. Freshman Abby Garvey continues to be a force in singles play as she has won the majority of her sets in a quick fashion and remains undefeated in singles play. Eliana Kelly and Lilly Renzi are also playing great in singles and also sport undefeated records.
Up Next: After the busy week, the Pioneers will host Houghton University on Friday, September 30 at 3:30 p.m. and Oswego State on Sunday, October 2 at 1 p.m.
