Track & Field Readies For St. Lawrence Open

UTICA, NY - The Utica University track and field program will head to Canton, NY for the St. Lawrence University Open on Friday, February 17 beginning at 3 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Utica University track and field program split up and had some athletes compete at the Boston University Invitational and others at the Ocean Breeze Meet in Staten Island, NY. Michael Roberts continued his great season and ran a 9:01 in the men's 3000m at Ocean Breeze which now ranks the fourth fastest time in Pioneer history. Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) has been incredible this season and smashed her own indoor 400m school record with a phenomenal time of 56.90. Laura Meade (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) ran a 1:02.90 in the 400m. Mix ran a 25.52 200m and Laura Meade (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) turned in a 26.71 performance in the women's 200m. Janaiya Cruz-Bermudez (East Hartford, CT/East Hartford) turned in a time of 2:25.07 which now ranks seventh all-time in the women's 800m. Anthony Leotta turned in a 4:38.35 mile and Zachary Brown ran a 4:41.53 mile. Jade Dening (Remsen, NY/Remsen) ran a 5:27.29 mile and Gianna Welker (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) clocked in at 5:38.13. Kyla Reed (Lowville, NY/Lowville) ran a 1:12.42 in the women's 400m. Jonathan Simmons turned in a performance of 53.86 in the men's 400m which set a new personal record. There were two competitors in the men's 800m with Tobias Jeralds clocking in at 2:04.49 and Tristan Vargo clocking in at 2:13.99. In the women's 800m Noella Burlette (Manchester, CT/Manchester) clocked in at 2:39.51. Gabrielle DeSanctis (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) threw a 14.68m toss which was one of her best throws this season. The women's distance relay team turned in a performance of 14:11.07 and the men clocked in at 11:09.48. The women's team was composed of Jade Dening (Remsen, NY/Remsen), Noella Burlette (Manchester, CT/Manchester), Kyla Reed (Lowville, NY/Lowville), and Gianna Welker (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany). The men's team featured Anthony Leotta, Jonathan Simmons, Tobias Jeralds, Zachary Brown, Tristan Vargo, and Michael Roberts. Jane Fahy (Oriskany, NY/MVCC/Oriskany) tossed a 12.39m throw in the women's shot put and was the only Division III athlete to reach the finals. Hayden Lohmann recorded a personal record in the men's 800m with a time of 2:00.44 which now ranks seventh all-time. Shane Tinney ran a 7.46 60m dash and has started to find his stride. Andy Hadasz had a phenomenal performance as he ran a 22.23 200m which is the second fastest in program history and the top time in the Empire 8 this winter. Other notable finishes in the men's 200m were Nolan Flynn (23.23), Ethan Kain (23.24), Shane Tinney (23.59), and Dion Putaski (23.89). The Pioneers were terrific in the men's 400m as all four participants set new personal records. Nolan Flynn clocked in at 51.29 which ranks sixth all-time and Andy Hadasz's time of 51.42 is now seventh all-time. Both Dion Putaski and Ethan Kain also set personal records as Putaski clocked in at 52.17 and Kain turned in a performance of 53.24. Antwan Kelly continued his record-breaking season and his 17.90m weight throw broke his previous school record of 17.83m. Kelly is the lone Pioneer to ever eclipse 17m and has done so an incredible five times this season. Nathan Florian's best toss was 15.45m and Justin Swavely's was 14.85m. Hunter Logan recorded a shot put of 15.77m and Billie Mays III tossed a throw of 14.11m. Zuriel Wright continued his amazing season and finished tied for fifth with a clearance of 1.94m and Blake Hobin recorded a height of 1.79m.
 
Hardware Galore: Antwan Kelly of the Empire 8 Utica University men's track and field team has been named Empire 8 Men's Co-Indoor Field Athlete of the week, as announced by the league on Monday. Kelly broke his own school record with a 17.90m weight throw at the Boston University Invitational. He is the only Pioneer to have thrown past 17m and he has done it a shocking five times this season. He is currently fourth in the Niagara Region; he has earned his fourth Empire 8 award after being named Co-Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. 
 
Record Breakers: Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) continues her fantastic season in the women's 200m where she crossed the finish line with a time of 25.52 making her third all-time for Utica. In the women's 400m, Mix is now first all-time with a time of 56.90 which is second in the Empire 8 and 5th in the region. Laura Meade (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) now holds the spot for eighth all-time in the women's 200m with a time of 26.71, moving her to 5th in the Empire 8 and 24th in the Niagara region. Meade also ranks ninth for the women's 400m in the conference. Janaiya Cruz-Bermudez (East Hartford, CT/East Hartford) holds the 19th all-time record in the 200m with a time of 27.78 which ranks her 11th in the Empire 8. Cruz-Bermudez also holds the seventh all-time spot in the 800m with a time of 2:25.07 moving her to second in the Empire 8 and 26th in the region. The women's distance medley relay of Jade Dening (Remsen, NY/Remsen), Noella Burlette (Manchester, CT/Manchester), Kyla Reed (Lowville, NY/Lowville), and Gianna Welker (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany), rank 12th in the region and fifth in the Empire 8 with a time of 14:11.07. 
 
Take Over: Hayden Lohmann set a school record in the men's 800m with a time of 2:00.44 making him seventh all-time and seventh in the Empire 8. Andy Hadasz is now second all-time in the men's 200m with a time of 22.23 and is 12th in the Niagara region while holding the top time in the Empire 8. Nolan Flynn is excelling as a freshman and is now 15th all-time and fourth in the Empire 8 in the 200m with a time of 23.23. Ethan Kain is just behind ranking 16th all-time and 12th in Empire 8 crossing the finish line at 23.24. A surging Dion Putaski ranks 15th all time and 20th in Empire 8 with a 52.17 in the 400m after his strong weekend performance. 
 
Dominance: The men's 400m team has dominated the Empire 8 as Hadasz is ranked seventh, Flynn is ranked 6th, Kain is ranked 16th, and Putaski is tenth for the men's 400m. The dominance continues in the men's shot put as Hunter Logan ranks fourth in the Niagara region and first in Empire 8.
 
Up Next: The teams will travel to Nazareth College for the Empire 8 Championships with the meet starting on Friday, February 24th at 3 p.m. and continuing Saturday, February 25th at 10 a.m.
