AUBURNDALE, FL - The Utica University baseball team fell in its final game of the RussMatt Invitational to the Springfield College Pride, 12-1, on Wednesday evening.
Utica was held to three hits in the game with one each coming from
John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany),
Jack Bono (Frankfort, NY/Frankfort-Schuyler) and
Steve Sclafani (North Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale).
Justin Mazovec (Lake Grove, NY/Centereach) drove in the team's lone run.
On the mound,
Frederick Callo Jr. (Milton, NY/Marlboro) was handed the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on two hits and five walks over 0.2 innings.
Connor Ford (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) pitched well in relief for the Pioneers, going 4.1 innings allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
The Pride put up six runs in the 1st inning as well as one in the bottom of the 4th to lead 7-0 entering the 5th.
It would be the 6th inning when Utica scored its first run of the game. With two outs and the bases loaded, Mazovec was hit by a pitch which brought home
Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) from third. However, Springfield came back with five more runs in the bottom half of the 6th which put the game out of reach.
Utica went down in order in the top of the 7th to finish off the game.
Utica (6-3, 0-0 Empire 8) will travel to Troy, NY on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers. Game one is set to begin at noon.
