Baseball Falls to RPI in Non-Conference Play

TROY, NY - The Utica University baseball team fell to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon. 
 
John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) led the Pioneers going 3-for-3 with an RBI on the afternoon. Nathan Yantz (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) tallied two hits while Steve Sclafani (North Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale), Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), and Jason Story (Hilton, NY/Hilton) each recorded one.
 
Derrike Goutremout (Chaumont, NY/Lyme Central) was credited with the loss after pitching 4.1 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits, with five strikeouts, and three walks issued. Nicholas Greene (Rome, NY/Central Valley Academy) pitched 1.2 innings allowing one run while Chris D'Agostino (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) allowed two runs in the 7th. Connor Ford (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) pitched a clean 8th inning allowing no hits.
 
RPI struck quickly with three doubles in the 1st inning to propel them to an early 2-0 lead. The Engineers added another run in the bottom of the 2nd on a sacrifice fly to increase its edge to 3-0.
 
The Pioneers recorded hits in the 3rd and 4th innings yet could not break through. RPI scored its fourth run of the game in the bottom of the 5th off an error to take a 4-0 lead.
 
Utica's bats came alive in the 6th with three hits in the inning. Yantz got the rally started as he singled to center field and advanced on a passed ball. After Yantz advanced to third, Longeretta singled to bring home Yantz for Utica's lone run of the game.  
 
Yet, the Engineers responded tacking on one more run in the bottom of the 6th and two more in the bottom of the 7th.
 
Utica (15-8, 7-2 Empire 8) will return home and host SUNY Poly on Wednesday, April 12 at 4 p.m.
