Men's Lacrosse Outduels Keuka on the Road

KEUKA PARK, NY - The Utica University men's lacrosse team went on the road and defeated the Keuka College Wolves 9-8 on Saturday afternoon.

Connor Costanza (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) led the team with two goals while the team's other seven goals came from seven different players. All nine goals also came unassisted. In goal, Patrick Oswald (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) recorded 16 saves en route to his sixth win of the year.

Costanza opened the scoring just 1:30 into the game to grant the Pioneers a quick 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, Keuka fired back to even the score 1-1. From there, Utica rattled off four goals in a row between the remaining minutes of the first quarter and the early stages of the second. Hayden Sachel (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) scored with six minutes left in the first while Jonathan Chilinski (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) beat the horn and scored as time expired in the first.

Kevin O'Brien-Bruno (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco) and Jack Hogan (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) then scored six seconds apart at 13:20 and 13:14 of the second before the Wolves broke their skid with 12:26 left in the half.

Caiden Frey (Accord, NY/Roundout Valley) and Sam Serrano (Stone Ridge, NY/Roundout Valley) also netted second quarter goals while the Wolves added one more of their own as the Pioneers held a 7-3 lead at the half.

Keuka came out strong to open the half with a pair of goals over the first five minutes of play. However, John Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) put the Pioneers back up by three midway through the quarter as the game moved into the fourth with Utica ahead 8-5.

The Wolves refused to go down quietly, scoring the first three goals of the fourth to pull even at 8-8. With 4:17 left in the game, Costanza came through with what proved to be the game-winner to help pull the team back to .500 in league action.

Utica (7-9, 3-3 Empire 8) will conclude its regular season next weekend when the team travels to Alfred University at 1 p.m.
