HOUGHTON, NY - The Utica University baseball team secured a 13-9 win in game one over the Keuka College Wolves at Houghton University on Friday evening.
Utica posted 13 runs on 16 hits on the backs of
John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) (3-5, 3B, 2B, BB, 2 RBI),
John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) (3-5, two 2B, BB, RBI) and
Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) (3-6, 2B).
Tyler Jennings (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Steve Sclafani (North Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale) drove in a pair of runs each as well.
On the mound,
Ryan Cardone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) earned the win after going six innings allowing five runs on 11 hits while striking out seven Wolves and walking none.
Dylan Sullivan (West Orange, NJ/Columbia) earned his first collegiate save after going three innings in relief allowing four runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks issued.
The Pioneers exploded for seven runs in the top of the 1st inning with the help of RBIs from
Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) (triple), Son (double),
Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) (single), Jennings (two-RBI single) and Sclafani, who reached on an error.
Cardone gave up three runs in the 1st inning but did enough to keep the Pioneers' lead into the 2nd, an inning in which both sides went down quietly.
The sides traded runs in the 3rd before Utica scored two in the 4th and another pair in the 5th to jump out to a comfortable 12-4 lead. Although the Wolves came across home five more times between the 5th and 9th innings, it was not enough to overcome Utica's initial eight-run lead.
Utica (13-7, 5-2 Empire 8) and Keuka will play a doubleheader at Houghton University on Saturday to complete the three-game series. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
