Baseball Caps Off Series Sweep of Keuka

HOUGHTON, NY - The Utica University baseball team completed its series sweep of the Keuka College Wolves after taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader. Both games were played at Houghton University.

Utica 12, Keuka 1 (7 Inn.)
Utica's red-hot offense carried into game one on Saturday with a 12 run showing on 16 hits. John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) led the way going 4-for-5 with three RBI. Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) also drove in a trio of runs as part of a 3-for-4 showing. Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) launched his first home run of the season while going 2-for-4 with two RBI total. Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and Matthew Kanyuk (Mellville, NY/Hills East) had multi-hot games as well.

On the hill, James Roeschlaub (Auburn, NY/Auburn) went the distance to pick up his third win of the year. Over his seven innings of work, Roeschlaub allowed just one run on six hits to go with three strikeouts and no walks.

John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) opened up Utica's scoring in the top of the 1st with an RBI single to make it a 1-0 game. In the top of the 2nd, an E7 by Elmira allowed two more Pioneers to touch home before Son drove in Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) on a single to give Utica a 4-0 cushion. Later in the 4th, Son and Battista each brought home runs to extend the team's lead to 6-0.

With Roeschlaub still dealing entering the 5th, the Pioneers gave the southpaw some more insurance runs, three in all, for a 9-0 advantage moving into the home half.

Roeschalub would lose his shutout in the bottom half however, he did so limiting the Wolves to just one run. May put the exclamation mark on the game with a two-run homer in the 7th to help Utica pull away to a 12-1 win.

Utica 11, Keuka 4
Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) led the offense with three hits in five trips to the dish while driving in a run. John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) had another multi-hit game including a home run while Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls), Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) and Tyler Jennings (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each had a pair of hits as well. Matthew Kanyuk (Mellville, NY/Hills East) also led the team with two RBI.

On the bump, Kooper Knabe (Cortland, NY/Cortland) picked up his fifth win of the year as the freshman has yet to lose a game in his collegiate career. He tossed six innings in which he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out two and walking none. Jake Mangino (Sayville, NY/Sayville) pitched the 7th and 8th innings allowing just one run while May threw a scoreless 9th.

After a scoreless top of the 1st, Keuka took its first lead of the entire series with an RBI single in the bottom half for an early 1-0 lead.

The sides traded scoreless innings until the Pioneers captured their first lead of the game in the top of the 4th. Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) came through with an RBI triple before John Longeretta (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) brought him home on a single for a 2-1 lead. However, Keuka tied the game on an E6 in the home half as the game entered the 5th even 2-2.

It wouldn't take long for the Pioneers to regain the lead. In the top of the 5th, Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) laid down a sacrifice bunt that turned into a throwing error by the Keuka first baseman. This allowed Steve Sclafani (North Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale) and Matthew Kanyuk (Mellville, NY/Hills East) to come around and score for a 4-2 edge.

Knabe continued to deliver with a scoreless bottom half of the inning to help keep Utica's lead intact.

Utica added another in the 6th on a Tyler Jennings (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) RBI single that brought home Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw), who reached on a single before stealing second base, for a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the frame. The Wolves would get the run back in the bottom half however, Knabe still escaped the inning with just one run allowed to keep Utica ahead 5-3 entering the 7th.

The sides traded runs in the 7th before the Pioneers separated themselves from Keuka with a five-run frame. Kanyuk drove in a pair on a double while Sclafani, who later scored on a wild pitch, also doubled home a run. Son delivered the final hit in the form of a solo shot to left field to give the team an 11-4 lead. Mangino went on to pitch a scoreless 8th while May, despite allowing two hits, pitched a clean 9th to finish off the sweep.

Utica (15-7, 7-2 Empire 8) will travel to Troy, NY on April 11 for a makeup game at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
